‘Angry and pissed off’: Diego’s actor slams Five and Lila’s romance in The Umbrella Academy
Let’s be honest, it was really weird
No matter what your thoughts were on the finale of The Umbrella Academy, that romance twist between Diego, Lila and Five was not something I ever saw coming.
It felt really weird, and it seems I’m not the only one who thought so, as David Castañeda, who plays Diego, admitted he felt “angry” and “pissed off” with the showrunner over the controversial storyline.

Just to catch you up to speed, during the last season of The Umbrella Academy, Lila and Diego are married and have three kids together, but she and Five get stuck in a subway for seven years together. They’re stuck because of timeline issues, obviously, and seven years to them is just two hours for everyone else. Whilst stuck together Five and Lila start a romance with each other and once they finally make it back home, Lila has to awkwardly tell Diego that she had an affair with his brother. Awkward vibes.
During an interview with Us Weekly, actor David Castañeda revealed his true thoughts on the unexpected romance, and it’s really savage. He admitted: “No, I didn’t understand. I was pissed off. I was angry. I talked to [our showrunner] Steve a few times. I was like, ‘Hey, does this really have to happen?’”

As for why the showrunner decided to include the romance, Steve told Tudum: “OK, so that’s my big swing of the year that I’m wondering if the fans will love or hate me for it. I felt that Five had to have a love story. I mean, he’s a 64-year-old man in the body of an 18-year-old.

“So we thought he could have a love story. And I thought, ‘How can he have a love story? He’s not the kind of guy who’s going to date.’ I thought Five needed to be with someone, whether it be a boy or girl. We thought we had an opportunity with Lila. And we tried it. I don’t know how the fans are going to take it.” Not great by the sounds of it.
