Um, the TikTok shop is apparently selling a herbal tea doctors are warning could kill you

‘All parts of the plant are poisonous – please don’t drink this’

| UPDATED

Doctors are warning against anyone looking to buy a herbal tea that is allegedly currently being flogged on the TikTok shop and contains a poisonous plant that could literally kill you. Influencers selling the Lily of the Valley herbal tea on TikTok that can kill you can earn commission on it, and doctors are speaking out on socials with warnings to absolutely not buy it.

Doctor Josh Trebach posted on Twitter / X this week warning and pleading with people to not buy the herbal tea from TikTok, informing that it can kill you if ingested. He says “Medical toxicologist here…I know a lot about poisonous plants please don’t drink Lily of the Valley tea (even if it’s for sale on TikTok) the plant is poisonous and can kill you.

“Lily of the Valley (convallaria majalis) contains convallatoxin which is a cardiac glycoside that inhibits your Na/K ATPase and can cause vomiting, hyperkalemia, dysrhythmias, and death. All parts of the plant are poisonous – please don’t drink this.”

The Tab had got quotes from Dr Masarat Jilani at Jude, who has explained further the danger of this product.

“Lily of the Valley tea, whatever TikTok influencers would have you believe, is extremely dangerous, has absolutely zero therapeutic benefits, and should never be consumed. Lily of the Valley is a toxic, poisonous plant which contains cardiac glycosides, compounds that can severely affect heart function, leading to fatal heart arrhythmias.

“When you ingest toxic substances like the cardiac glycosides found in Lily of the Valley, your kidneys, which are your body’s way of filtering these harmful chemicals, can be overwhelmed, leading to acute renal failure. The toxins in Lily of the Valley don’t just target one organ, they affect the entire body and cause life-threatening damage to your heart and kidneys.

“If you think you may have consumed Lily of the Valley tea, you should seek emergency medical care, explain what you have been drinking, and if possible, take any packaging with you.”
