There’s no show that does romance quite like The Vampire Diaries, and after learning most of the cast dated each other in real life it’s no surprise the chemistry was off the charts.

Whilst I don’t know if I’ll ever quite get over Nina and Ian breaking up there were a lot of other couples to come out of The Vampire Diaries. Some of them even got married which is absolutely adorable. So, let’s find out which Vampire Diaries cast members dated in real life and whether they stood the test of time.

Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder

Damon and Elena are hands down the best romantic pairing in The Vampire Diaries, you’d best believe my teenage self was quite literally screaming when they finally got together. A lot of their tension comes down to the fact they also dated off screen for just over three years.

They started dating in 2010 at the start of season two, with Nina joking she did the one thing she said she’d never do. She explained in an interview: “The first time I was on the cover of Seventeen, the cover line said, ‘Nina: Why She Wouldn’t Date Any of Her Costars.’ And then cut to two years later, I am. It’s funny that I said that, but you know what? It was honestly what I believed at the time.”

She added: “I didn’t want to be dating one of my costars — my goal on the show was to be professional. But sometimes you can’t help who you have a connection with, and you can only fight it for so long — which I did for a really, really long time.”

Paul and Torrey were actually married for one year before she appeared on The Vampire Diaries as Dr Meredith Fell. Slightly awkwardly they started divorce proceedings whilst she was still starring on the show alongside Paul. Thank god they didn’t have to do too many scenes together!

Paul Wesley and Phoebe Tonkin

The same year that Paul and Torrey finalized their divorce he moved on with another one of his Vampire Diaries co-stars and dated cast member Phoebe Tonkin. Phoebe played werewolf Hayley in the show, and the duo dated on and off for four years before breaking their relationship off completely in 2017.

Candice King and Zach Roerig

This is a pairing and both can completely see and also one that baffles me. I am a Matt hater though so I have to admit I’m biased. Candice King and Zach apparently dated for one year when Vampire Diaries was being filmed, and the pair frequently posted wholesome pictures together on their Instagram.

Joseph Morgan and Persia White

This pairing has to be one of the most wholesome to come out of the show, because Joseph Morgan who plays Klaus and Persia White who plays Abby Bennet ended up getting married.

They started dating after she made a brief appearance as Bonnie’s mum and ended up getting married in 2014 with Joseph legally adopting Persia’s daughter. They look very loved up together and it’s very sweet to see!
