Named: All the MPs who have voted against abortion laws in the UK

Universities minister Michelle Donelan is among the 99 MPs who voted against extending abortion rights to Northern Ireland

TW: Mention of sexual assault

On Friday, the US Supreme Court voted to overturn the landmark Roe v Wade ruling which protected a woman’s right to terminate her pregnancy in America, a move which is expected to ban abortions across half of American states. There have been protests around the world, and people are horrified at what this means for women’s rights.

But whilst women still have the right to abortions in the UK, and have done since 1967 in England, Scotland and Wales, voting on abortion laws isn’t a thing of the past in the UK. Back in 2019, MPs voted to legalise same-sex marriage and extend abortion rights in Northern Ireland – but 99 MPs in the UK voted *against* the move on abortion rights (73 also opposed the same-sex marriage vote, in case you were wondering).

Some of these MPs who voted against abortion laws in 2019 include: now-deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab; Michelle Donelan, who is now universities minister; Jacob Rees-Mogg; Kevin Foster, who works under Priti Patel; Charlie Elphicke, who was jailed in 2020 for sexually assaulting two women (jurors heard that after he assaulted one victim he chased her around his home chanting “I’m a naughty Tory”).

Just last week, MPs voted on an amendment that would allow the UK Government to directly commission abortion services in Northern Ireland, essentially increasing access to abortions – it passed, but 70 MPs voted against it. The majority of them are men, and they include Iain Duncan Smith; joining many of the cast from 2019 including Michelle Donelan, Kevin Foster, and Jacob Rees-Mogg. Dominic Raab, who voted against the laws in 2019, did not vote.
