Charli XCX’s viral VMAs reaction wasn’t about Taylor Swift, so here’s what actually happened

Charli XCX and Taylor Swift’s alleged feud has been dragged back into the spotlight after a viral clip from the VMAs appeared to show Charli looking less than impressed by one of Taylor’s big wins.

Before anyone starts reading too much into a celebrity side-eye, there’s a fairly important detail missing from the viral clip: Charli wasn’t reacting to Taylor at all.

Charli attended the 2026 MTV VMAs on Sunday, where she was nominated for Best Pop and Best Art Direction for SS26. Taylor was also at the ceremony and picked up multiple awards, including the first-ever Artist Director Honor.

A clip shared on X then began doing the rounds, claiming it showed Charli reacting to Taylor’s win. In the footage, Charli looks distinctly unimpressed, which sent people straight back to all those long-running rumours about the pair supposedly having beef.

One person who watched the ceremony live pointed out exactly what was going on, replying: “All of us who watched the awards LIVE know that that reaction wasn’t for Taylor; her reaction was for Nirvana”

And, crucially, the clip isn’t AI either. It’s a genuine reaction from Charli, she was just reacting to something completely different. Nirvana reunited at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards to honour their legacy, with band members Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear receiving the Video Vanguard Award for their contribution to music and pop culture over the years.

So why do people think Charli XCX and Taylor Swift have beef?

Charli joined Taylor as one of the opening acts on the Reputation tour in 2018. The following year, Charli spoke to Pitchfork about the experience and said: “As an artist, it kind of felt like I was getting up onstage and waving to five-year-olds.”

The comment caused backlash from Swifties, prompting Charli to apologise and explain that her comments had been taken out of context.

Then came Brat. Two months before the album was released in 2024, Charli posted a “brat PSA” on TikTok warning people against taking the lyrics too literally.

“The other tracks in question aren’t diss tracks,” Charli explained. “They’re really just about how it’s so complicated being an artist, especially a female artist, where you are pitted against your peers and also expected to be best friends with every single person constantly, when if you’re not, you’re deemed a bad feminist.”

One of the songs that immediately got people talking was “Sympathy Is a Knife”, which explores feeling insecure around another woman.

People quickly decided the mystery woman was Taylor, particularly because of the lyrics: “Don’t wanna see her backstage at my boyfriend’s show. / Fingers crossed behind my back, I hope they break up quick.”

At the time, people connected the lyrics to Taylor’s headline-making relationship with The 1975 frontman Matty Healy. Charli has since married Healy’s bandmate, drummer George Daniel.

Taylor Swift’s ‘Actually Romantic’ has brought the rumours back

The speculation got another boost with Taylor’s album The Life of a Showgirl, particularly its track “Actually Romantic”.

The song has been widely interpreted by fans as a response to Charli’s “Everything Is Romantic” and “Sympathy Is a Knife”, with several lyrics appearing to reference the situation.

“I heard you call me ‘Boring Barbie’ when the coke’s got you brave,” Swift sings.

She continues: “High-fived my ex and then said you’re glad he ghosted me / Wrote me a song saying it makes you sick to see my face / Some people might be offended / But it’s actually sweet.”

Neither artist has confirmed that the songs are direct attacks on the other.
