Melissa McCarthy found the Gilmore Girls scripts ‘really hard’ to work with

Melissa McCarthy, who played Lorelai Gilmore’s best friend Sookie St. James in Gilmore Girls, has shared that she found the show’s scripts “really hard” to work with.

The show’s creator, Amy Sherman-Palladino, is known for writing distinctively loquacious dialogue. Melissa McCarthy joked that dealing with her scripts for Gilmore Girls was “good training”.

She told Variety: “It was hard! It was really hard. But to me, that was normal, because it was my first show. So I was like, ‘Oh, our scripts are 93 pages, and you can’t change a contraction, even if you get them that morning and it’s a 10-page oner.’ And that’s just what it was.”

However, Melissa has come to see why Amy Sherman-Palladino had such a rigid approach to the Gilmore Girls scripts.

“I love that she had her own style,” Melissa continued, “and I love that she built that world. I love that she fought for it, because a woman running that show at that time, I think you kind of had to be like, ‘It’s my way or the highway.’ I think she had to probably fight to keep it the way she wanted to.

She also shared how “nice” it is that people still come up to her to speak about Gilmore Girls, 19 and a half years after the original series ended.

Melissa said: “But when something catches like that, like, ‘that’s my comfort show,’ or, ‘that’s what I watch going to sleep’… what a thing to get to do something that gives people comfort like that.”
