The ages of the new Harry Potter TV show cast, compared to their characters in the books

If you braved the new trailer for *that* HBO Harry Potter TV show, you may have felt some characters had different vibes to their counterparts in the films. Here’s a rundown of the ages of the cast of that Harry Potter show are, compared to how old their characters are supposed to be in the book Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

Professor Dumbledore

Professor Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore is 110 years old when Harry Potter starts Hogwarts. Funnily enough, the actor John Lithgow, who plays Dumbledore in the much-dragged TV show, isn’t quite that old – he’s 80.

Hermione Granger

Hermione is 11 at the very start of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone – although she turns 12 three weeks after term starts. Arabella Stanton is 12 right now.

Hagrid

Nick Frost is aged 54 right now. That’s a fair bit younger than the character Hagrid, who is 62 at the start of the first book.

The actor Janet McTeer is 65 years old. That’s actually older than Professor McGonagall is in the books – she’s only 56 years old when harry starts Hogwarts. Maggie Smith was 66 when the Philosopher’s Stone film came out, by the way.

Harry Potter turns 11 near the start of the first book. Remember Hagrid’s godawful cake-decorating skills? Dominic McLaughlin is 12 now, but was 11 when the show was filmed.

Professor Snape

Er, so in the books, Snape is only 31 when Harry starts Hogwarts. James and Lily Potter got married, fought in the war against Voldemort, had a kid and got murdered all by the age of 21. This generation of characters seem to have been all aged up for the film series in order to fit in with Alan Rickman, who was 54 by the first film.

The new actor who is playing Snape, Paapa Essiedu, is currently 36 years old.
