How long catfish mum Kendra Licari actually spent in jail, and what her life is like now

The number one film on Netflix right now is Unknown Number: The High School Catfish, and in it we met Kendra Licari. Her daughter, Lauryn Licari, started receiving a string of horrible messages and threats.

In October 2020, a 13-year-old Lauryn and her then-boyfriend Owen began getting suspicious texts from an unknown number. There was a brief pause in the messages, but then it turned into a daily barrage of hate and threats, for the next 15 months.

After investigations focused around Lauryn and Owen’s school friends, the truth came out. In a shocking turn, it was revealed the messages were being sent by Kendra Licari – Lauryn’s mother.

Kendra admitted to what she had done, and faced prison time. Here’s what happened to her and the latest on her life today.

How long was Kendra Licari in prison for?

In December 2022, Kendra Licari was arrested and charged with multiple counts of stalking a minor and using a computer to commit a crime. She pleaded guilty to two counts of stalking a minor. In the Netflix documentary it was revealed Kendra Licardi was sentenced to prison. It’s said she was told she would be going to prison for “at least a year and a half”.

Her full sentence was 19 months to five years in prison. She was sentenced in April 2023 and then released on August 8th 2024. So, Kendra Licari served in fact around 16 months.

As of today, Kendra is still on parole. She will be supervised until February 2026, according to her inmate record from the Michigan Department of Corrections. Kendra Licari is currently living in Michigan.

According to her plea deal, Kendra is not able to see her daughter. In the aftermath of everything, Kendra and her husband Shawn divorced, and he won full custody of Lauryn.

Her parole guidelines state Kendra now has to live under a bunch of strict rules. These include not being able to move house, she cannot leave the state of Michigan, she has to attend any requested drug and alcohol testing, and she has to “make earnest efforts to find and maintain employment.”

The creator of the Netflix doc has spoken about what Kendra’s life is like now. In particular, her relationship with Lauryn. “She’s remorseful that she has severely altered her relationship with her daughter in most likely a negative way,” Skye Borgman told Tudum. “I mean, will they have a relationship? Will they get through this? I don’t know. There will probably be some kind of relationship. Will it be the same? Absolutely not. There’s no way it can be the same.”
