Uh-oh, Taylor Swift’s new album cover for The Life of a Showgirl is being dragged

‘It looks like a low effort Canva poster’

Taylor Swift has unveiled the cover of her next album The Life of a Showgirl, but plenty of people are not pleased. Here’s why people are dragging Taylor Swift’s album cover for The Life of a Showgirl.

Taylor Swift dramatically revealed her next album on Travis Kelce’s podcast. The Life of a Showgirl drops on 3rd October (aka Mean Girls day). Twelve tracks have been confirmed, including a collab with Sabrina Carpenter.

The main album cover depicts Taylor lying in a murky pool. She’s wearing a pretty minimalistic sparkly showgirl outfit, that would definitely not be practical to swim in. Her face is just above the water. People reckon this could be a homage to Sir John Everett Millais’s famous Ophelia painting, since the album’s opening track is called “The fate of Ophelia”. Fragments of the same photo are layered over the top. The album’s title is in sparkly lettering, and spaced around Taylor.

Of course, three alternate album covers will be available for Swifties to spend all their savings on. This isn’t exactly a surprise, since Taylor legit released 34 versions of her last album, The Tortured Poets Department.

A lot of people have criticised the design of the cover. Reddit users dragged the text for “giving Drag Race promo font” and the style for having “school project vibes”.

Someone wrote: “You can barely see the ‘showgirl’ in the title. It just looks like a low effort Canva poster.”

“It’s just tacky and dated,” another complained, “looks like a rom com movie cover.”

Lots of music nerds accused Taylor’s new aesthetic of being too similar to Kylie Minogue’s Showgirl era in the early 2000s. Someone wrote on X: “The Life of a Showgirl… guessing the new Taylor album is all about Kylie Ann Minogue?” Several Kylie fans proclaimed her “the original showgirl” or “the one and only showgirl”.

It seems like Kylie Minogue actually caught wind of all this chat, because she wrote on her Instagram: “When all your friends start sending you your Showgirl memes!!! Awww. Showgirl life is ‘a thing’, multi dimensional and so much more than feathers and dazzle. Respect and admiration to all my fellow hard working Showgirls.”

Inevitably, some people also took issue with the fact that Taylor wasn’t wearing a lot of clothes on the album cover. *Gasp* God forbid a woman show some skin. Perhaps these people missed what a showgirl is?
