Right, what’s going on with *that* viral video of the ‘oldest man in the world’?

The video claims the man in India is over 200 years old

Right now, there’s a viral video going around claiming to be of a man in India, who is the oldest man in the world. The video shows what looks like a very, very old man, and it claims he’s over 200.

“Meet the oldest man in the world, from India he is 200 years +,” the video claims. It shows him walking down some steps, and needing assistance to walk around. People in the comments are shook at what they’re seeing. The video has been posted across  Twitter, as well as Facebook, TikTok and Instagram. It’s getting millions of views.

So, erm, what is going on?

Is the oldest man in the world really a 200-year-old in India?

I’m sorry to say, but the video is not true. Shock! Twitter makes up things. A lot of the videos of the man in India tag one particular Instagram account as the source, and the page is known for sharing quite out of context clips, in hope that they’ll go viral. There’s not much fact checking going on here.

There are currently two men of the same age, who are the oldest men on the planet. They were both born in 1912, and are 112.

The oldest man in the world is actually from the UK. He is called John Alfred Tinniswood, and was born in Liverpool on 26th August 1912 – so, he’a about to celebrate his 113th birthday. The second oldest man was born the same year. João Marinho Neto was born in Brazil on October 5th, 1912.

The oldest person in the world is a woman called Ethel, also from the UK. Ethel Caterham lives in Surrey, and is 116. She was born on August 21st, 1909.

So, who actually is the man in the video?

A few people are claiming the video is actually AI, but the man in it has gone viral a number of times. The same man went viral last year, when people claimed he was an “188-year-old man found living in a cave”. Then, it was said the man is actually Indian Hindu saint Siyaram Baba, who is believed to be 110. Mystery solved!

When asked by Guinness World Records for his secret to living a long life, John Tinniswood said his longevity is just down to “pure luck”. He said: “You either live long or you live short, and you can’t do much about it.”
