Here’s where Netflix’s Ginny and Georgia is set, plus the surprising real filming locations

The dimensions of time and space really seem to work differently in the Ginny and Georgia universe. What do you mean that the whole show is supposed to have taken place over just seven months? And in the gap between season two and season three, Austin appeared to have aged several years in a matter of minutes. Well, the matter of where the show takes place is just as complicated. Here’s a proper explanation of where Netflix’s Ginny and Georgia is supposedly set.

No, Wellsbury doesn’t exist

Sorry, folks. There isn’t really a town called Wellsbury in Massachusetts. There is a Wellesley and a West Newbury in Massachusetts, so maybe that’s where the writers got the name from?

The show’s creator Sarah Lampert grew up in a Massachusetts town called Newton. She told PopViewers her own upbringing inspired the setting for Ginny and Georgia. “Wellsbury is based off a town that I grew up in. It had this whole idea of being very woke, and our slogan was ‘no place for hate’, and it was obviously still problematic. And Ginny navigating through that is a big part of the show.”

Several alumni of Newton North High School have noticed similarities between the school’s old building and Wellsbury High School in the show. Apparently the main corridor was also painted with different colours, and had potted plants.

I feel so lied to. As Ginny and Georgia is set in New England, you’d expected it to be filmed there, right? But it’s actually filmed in Canada. The indoors scenes were shot at TriBro studios in Toronto. But lots of the show was really filmed in a pretty town called Cobourg, that’s about 100km east of Toronto.

A real restaurant called The El was used for exterior shots off the Blue Farm Cafe where Joe and Ginny work.

The building that features as Wellsbury High School is actually the old site of a secondary school in Toronto. It was called Nelson A. Boylen Collegiate Institute that shut in 2016.
