‘I lost everything’: MAFS bride Katie explains why she’s beefing with Jacqui and Clint

Katie abruptly left an interview when Jacqui arrived

In a confrontation literally no one saw coming, MAFS Australia bride Katie Johnston abruptly left an interview once Jacqui Burfoot jumped on with her soon-to-be husband, Clint Rice.

Katie was one of the first brides we met on season 12 of MAFS Australia, but she didn’t stay for long because of her marriage to teacher Tim Gromie. He just wasn’t interested at all, refused to give the relationship a try, and then switched the blame onto her when confronted by the less-than-pleased experts. For that reason, we didn’t get to see Katie interact with the rest of the cast a great deal, which is probably why we had no clue she was beefing with Clint and Jacqui.

Why is MAFS’ Katie bickering with Jacqui and Clint?

Katie recently sat down with Carly Portch to talk all things MAFS alongside gentle giant Dave Hand. Everything seemed to be going well until Carly announced that “Jacqui just entered the chat”, and Katie went quiet, making an awkward face and letting Dave take the reins of the conversation.

Jacqui and Clint then joined the video chat from their – Sorry, his – Tasmania mansion, with Katie leaving the chat without uttering a word just a few seconds later. Neither Carly nor Dave mentioned Katie leaving, which was why it was super weird when Jacqui randomly said, “If you want to know what the beef is about, then we’ll just be honest.”

“What beef? I feel like I’ve missed a chapter,” Carly questioned.

Undertaking the mammoth task of explaining the eye-roll drama, Jacqui explained how Lucinda Light, a former MAFS bride and friend of Katie’s, shared her support for Jacqui’s on-screen husband, Ryan Donnelly. Naturally, Jacqui messaged Lucinda in an attempt to get her on the home team, stating, “She shouldn’t be publicly supporting Ryan because he’s going to go down.”

Clint also penned a post directed at Lucinda, specifically mentioning how Lucinda had supported Katie amidst her “tax fraud and theft stuff” going on. So, that’s why Katie left the video stream.

Here’s Katie’s side of the messy, messy story

Later in the interview, Carly jumped back on a call with Katie to get her side of the story. Katie explained how the social media post that broke the camel’s back was actually just Lucinda wishing Ryan the best on “putting positivity” out there.

“She’s accusing me of tax fraud and theft, and that’s just such a crazy thing to do given that I had to liquidate because of Covid,” Katie explained. “I lost everything during Covid.”

It seems that Jacqui was messily referring to Katie’s EATS business, which, upon closing, owed $493,927. $150,709 of that was superannuation, which Katie is paying back via a payment plan, $190,980 was owed to the tax office, and $141,174 was owed to Mercedes.
