Ben Affleck *finally* breaks his silence on his dramatic divorce from Jennifer Lopez

After months of keeping a low profile, Ben Affleck has finally spoken out about his divorce from Jennifer Lopez.

She filed for divorce from him on 20th August 2024 – their second year wedding anniversary.

In an interview for GQ magazine, Ben Affleck alluded to the reason for their split. He said: “I guess there’s a tendency to look at breakups and want to identify root causes or something. But honestly, like I said, the truth is much more quotidian than probably people would believe or would be interesting.”

He also clarified he had “nothing but respect” for her.

Ben Affleck also addressed a long-standing rumour that scenes in Jennifer Lopez’s 2024 Amazon Prime documentary weren’t the reason why they got divorced. In The Greatest Love Story Never Told, Ben Affleck looked somewhat uncomfortable when Jennifer Lopez announced the show would delve into their personal lives. Ben told the cameras he thinks of relationships as “private” and “sacred”. These moments caused fans to theorise the couple might have split because Ben Affleck was less comfortable in the spotlight than Jennifer Lopez was.

In the interview, Ben Affleck admitted he is more “reserved” than his ex-wife. He said: “There are a lot of people who I think have handled celebrity more adeptly and more adroitly than I have, Jennifer among them. My temperament is to be a little bit more reserved and private than hers. As happens in relationships, you don’t always have the same attitude towards these things.”

When filming the documentary, he had to “reconcile” his own desire for privacy with his wanting everyone to see how “great” Jennifer Lopez is.

He added: “I think the thing that I said in that documentary or the piece that they used was where I said, ‘You don’t marry a ship’s captain and then say, “Well, I don’t like going out in the water.’ You’ve got to own what you knew going into any relationship.”

However, Ben Affleck debunked the theory that the scenes in the documentary led to his divorce from Jennifer Lopez. He said: “I think it’s important to say that wasn’t the cause of some major fracture. It’s not like you can watch that documentary and go, “Oh, now I understand the issues that these two had.”
