Cardigans, skirts and shirts: Here’s what to wear this spring as an Exeter student

Yes, linen trousers are on the list

Spring has only just arrived, yet Exeter students have already transitioned their wardrobes in the blink of an eye.

Thick scarves are being swapped for skinny ones, jeans are being ditched for linens, and Ralph Lauren jumpers are being traded for Ralph Lauren tops (because, of course, there’s so much variety). As soon as the temperature hits a mild 15 degrees, Exeter students seize the opportunity to flaunt the full extent of their “gap yah”’ shopping sprees, proudly debuting their latest Urban and vintage finds.

So, based on my expert observations, what should you wear as an Exeter student this spring? Allow me to enlighten you…

1. Knit cardigans

First up, knit cardigans. I can’t seem to physically escape this item of clothing – I see them everywhere. In my opinion, these cardigans have become the new linens. But hey, you can’t deny that they’re super cute, versatile, and come in so many different colours. Plus, they’re incredibly soft and lightweight, making them perfect for spring. Just don’t be surprised if you feel like a sheep in the herd (that being said, I’ll still be buying one for myself).

2. Ruffle skirts

On the warmer spring days, I can totally see the “Exetah” girls rocking the ruffle skirts that have been trending, especially with Sabrina Carpenter’s tour happening right now – it’s totally on theme. This piece is perfect for both spring and summer, or even a cheeky night out at TP (though you’ll probably need a jumper so you don’t freeze to death.)

3. Button-up shirts

I’ve only seen a handful of these, but I can totally envision Exeter students wearing casual button-up shirts this spring. Whether worn unbuttoned, tied, or even cropped, I think this could make for the perfect layering piece or statement item. I have a couple myself, and it’s perfect for this type of weather. Plus, it completely captures the business-casual vibe many Exeter students strive for.

4. Anything Ralph Lauren

I’m sorry, but it just had to be mentioned. Exeter is, of course, renowned for being infected with Ralph Lauren. Whether that is jumpers, tops, or accessories – at this point, you really can’t escape it. Just learn to embrace it like the rest of us.

5. Off the shoulder jumpers

An item of clothing that’s often overlooked or not seen as “Exetah” is definitely the off-the-shoulder jumpers. Personally, I love these – I think they’re so chic and classy. For those colder spring days, these jumpers keep you a bit warmer while still allowing you to stay fashionable for the new season.

6. Floral tops

You know those floral, flowy tops that have replaced the corset-style clubbing tops people used to wear? Well, those are definitely here to stay. As the warmer weather continues, I can see Exeter students investing in a cupboard full of these tops. If you’re not sure where to look, they’re all over Urban Outfitters – you’re welcome, “Exetah” girlies.

7. Linen trousers

Ha, you thought I wasn’t going to mention these? How could I not? Exeter students love linens like they would love their new-born child. Linen trousers are here to stay. These timeless pieces will forever remain in Exeter, whether you like it or not.
