Bristol University surges up 23 places in the global reputation rankings

It also ranked in the UK’s top 10

Bristol University has risen 23 places in the newly released Times Higher Education reputation rankings 2025.

This means the university ranks 68th in the world, and ninth in the UK.

It also only slightly came behind the University of Manchester (ranked 50th globally), and ahead of Warwick Uni (ranked 95th globally).

The rankings are based on a global survey of senior academics who assess reputation based on teaching and research quality.

The criteria for the reputation rankings have been revamped for 2025, taking into consideration the number of votes for research and teaching, comparison with other institutions, and diversity of votes from different territories and subject areas.

Bristol was placed in the 91-100 category in the last reputation ranking in 2023, meaning that the university has surged at least 23 places.

Bristol was ranked in the 81-90 category in 2022, and in 2021, it placed 101-125, so this year’s performance is certainly impressive.

Harvard University took the overall top spot, with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the University of Oxford coming joint second in the world for reputation.

Bristol was placed between Utrecht University in the Netherlands and the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

These figures come a couple of months after the Times Higher Education rankings 2025, which placed the university at 78th in the world.

Reputation is super important for students and graduates for employability prospects so this ranking is a promising sign for the university.

Prof Judith Squires, the University’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost, said: “It is wonderful to see Bristol making strides in THE’s highly regarded rankings.

“It is particularly pleasing that fellow academics are recognising our research and teaching as world leading. We collaborate with universities across the globe and we are incredibly proud of those strong relationships.

“Thank you to everyone in our community – staff, students, alumni and partners here in Bristol and around the world – for making this possible.”
