We asked and you delivered: York students share their 2025 New Year’s resolutions

New Year, new you? Let’s lock in now x

Happy New Year! As a student, you’re probably feeling either super motivated for the semester ahead or have completely lost all hope (I’m talking to you third years). So, we asked York students over on our Insta what their New Year’s resolutions are and the responses were interesting to say the least. Does New Year really mean new you? Here’s the low down on what York students are trying to change and stick to this year.

‘Drink less’

Off to an optimistic start here. No more trebles for you! How will you survive? Why not make it interesting and give dry Jan a go? Could be a great way to cut out distractions and focus on your assessments for a good few months. Let’s hope you can keep it up!

‘Survive the last part of my degree so I can escape’

Wow! Going into 2025 surviving and not thriving I see. I’m sure every third year can see where you’re coming from at the minute, the dissertation pressure is no joke. Just imagine walking across the stage in July for some motivation, but also don’t forget to appreciate York while you’re here.

‘Stop spending unnecessary money’

This is so incredibly hard in York. From shopping at the Nisa, to library sweet treats, to cafes on every corner, it can be very difficult to save money at uni in York. This was a very popular resolution, so maybe start by cutting out that Salt & Pepper post club guys. Here’s to hoping prices of pretty much everything will magically drop in 2025 (doubt it)!

‘Find more things to do in York’

York is quite small so can seem a little boring after a few years here. However, the amazing thing about York is that you’ll never run out of different places to try and explore. Every time I go into town I seem to find something that I’ve never seen before, it’s actually so weird.

Here are my top ideas of more things to do: pottery painting, exercise classes, Picturehouse cinema 16-25 saver club, and a day trip to Leeds. Yes, you can leave and find a lot more things to do. Yorkshire is an amazing place for exploring and with the Moors and Leeds right on our doorstep, if you can’t find anything in York, I’m sure you’ll find something there.

‘Never go to Salvos again!’

Sounds like a life resolution but I see your point. Many would probably agree that it’s over rated, but others would queue for over an hour in the rain. Think of this as an opportunity to explore the other clubs York has to offer, but I can’t guarantee that they’re much better (cough cough Pop world).

‘To actually go to lectures’

We’ve all thought and said, “it’s recorded so I’ll just catch up later”, but it’s a slippery slope from there. Everyone knows the pain of trying to catch up online. You can’t find the right lecture, the lecturer only records half and you end up on speed 3.5x scrolling on TikTok. It’s not worth it. Grab a coffee, meet your friends and maybe just get a sweet treat after as a reward…

‘Hand something in on time’

What a perfect time for new year to roll around, exam season. Do they do it on purpose? It’s a stressful time and with multiple assessments on at once, it’s a struggle to get everything in on time. I doubt you’ll be alone in this resolution with semester two looming!

‘Go on a date’

Someone was eating grapes under the table on New Years Eve! This is an exciting resolution for uni because you’re always meeting new people – whether it’s in a seminar or the club smoking area. There are also some amazing date spots in York. Grab brunch in Rise or go for drinks in Fossgate Tap. Might as well enjoy it!

So, there you have it, the 2025 resolutions of York students. Definitely some interesting ones in there – hope you stick to them guys. Happy New Year!
