Five Indian students were involved in the crash which resulted in the driver and three passengers being hospitalised as well as the death of another

A Swansea University Master’s student has died in a car crash in Leicestershire.

On Tuesday 10th December, five Indian students  were involved in a major car crash which led to four people, including the driver being hospitalised and one dead. The driver has since been arrested on suspicion of death by dangerous driving.

The accident involved a single vehicle which left the A6 road in Kibworth, with the car veering off the road and coming to rest in a ditch.

Chiranjeevi Panguluri, 32, a Master’s student at Swansea University who lived in Leicester and was originally from Chimakurthy, India, was declared dead at the scene.

The other three passengers and the driver were all taken to hospital.

The driver, a 27-year-old student from Telangana, was arrested on suspicion of death by dangerous driving and has since been released on police bail. According to the Times of India, police have confirmed that the driver has been discharged from the hospital.

One of the passengers, Sai Badrinath Thenetti, 23, who was born in Chodavaram and is also a Master’s student at Swansea University, sustained several serious injuries and is currently in hospital in Leicester.

Yamalayya Bandlamudi, 27,  a Nottingham Trent University student, who comes from Pamidipadu, was also seriously injured in the crash and remains in hospital.

Leicestershire Police said that the passenger’s “injuries, whilst serious, are not believed to be life threatening” and that the students’ families have all been informed.

Speaking with the Times of India, friends of the five Teluga students said that they “were all living in Leicester and travelling that morning to work at a warehouse. Due to the rainy weather, the tyres skidded and the brakes failed.

“In order to stop the car, the driver tried to hit a roadside tree or roadside object but instead the car veered off the road and went down a slope, landing in a ditch. Pranavi flagged down a truck driver who stopped and called the police for assistance.”
