Here is which York college all the Love Actually characters would be in
Colin Firth is soooo Constantine
It’s that time of year – it’s officially Love Actually season! The time of year where we all rewatch one of the most popular Christmas films and end up feeling pretty happy. You get to rewatch all of your favourite scenes (be honest, Hugh Grant dancing to Jump has to be up there), and also remind yourself of all of the characters and strands of the plot that you have forgotten about.
But, have you ever wondered which college the Love Actually characters would have been in, had they been Uni of York students? Well, if you have then look no further…
Billy Mack (Bill Nighy) – Derwent
Starting off strong with the character who starts the film, it only makes sense that the party animal, Billy Mack, is in one of the colleges with a party reputation – Derwent!
At the centre of Campus West, Derwent is at the heart of all of the action for freshers, which is why I think that Billy Mack would have chosen Derwent for his first year at the Uni of York. You would regularly see him in Courtyard with a pint, especially when he was meant to be in his lectures.
Karen (Emma Thompson) – Vanbrugh
One of Love Actually‘s most famous characters, and central to one of the films biggest plot lines, is Karen.
Most Read
Arguably, the films most famous (and gut-wrenching) scene involves Karen describing her love of Joni Mitchell, so I think that she would have picked Vanbrugh, partly for its weekly live music nights in V-bar. I also think that she would have thought practically and been a fan of Vanbrugh’s perfect location in the heart of Campus West – being close to both the Nisa and the bus stop.
Sam (Thomas Brodie-Sangster) – James
Normally known for its sporty reputation, one of the things that James College is underrated for is actually being popular with music students, which is why I think that Sam would have picked it as his first choice.
He would be amongst like-minded musicians, and I also think that fellow musician and the love of his life, Joanna (Olivia Olson), would have been a student in James College too.
Judy (Joanna Page) – Alcuin
In my opinion, one of the films most underrated characters is Judy. She doesn’t get anywhere near the most screen time, but she is also arguably one of the films most likeable and inoffensive characters, which is why I think that she would have been in one of the most underrated colleges – Alcuin. I’ll admit, I might be a bit biased as a former Alcuin first year, but I think that Judy would have fitted right in.
Sarah (Laura Linney) – Anne Lister
Another character who barely gets any screen time in Love Actually is Sarah, who is in love with her co-worker Carl, and when she finally gets her chance with him, ends up having to leave and take care of her brother. Personally, I think Sarah would have chosen Anne Lister, one of Uni of York’s new colleges, with plenty of personality, but not known as one of the party colleges.
Jamie (Colin Firth) – Constantine
It’s fair to say that Constantine is one of the pricier accommodations for a first year Uni of York student, but I think that Jamie, the aspiring novelist in the film, would have chosen it as a fresher.
Instead of his luxury holiday home as the location to write his thriller, I can imagine he would have written it in Constantine, had he been a Uni of York student.
John (Martin Freeman) – David Kato
Another underrated Love Actually character, in my opinion, is John. Much like his love interest Judy, John doesn’t get a lot of screen time in the film, but is also very rarely disliked by Love Actually fans. So, I think he would have been in an underrated Campus East college – David Kato.
Daniel (Liam Neeson) – Goodricke
Daniel, a solid Love Actually character, would make a solid choice for his Uni of York accommodation: Goodricke. Pretty standard, but very homely and full of community.
Juliet (Keira Knightley) – Langwith
Juliet is part of one of the films most iconic scenes, and personally, I think she would have been in Langwith College. I think she would have been a fan of karaoke Fridays at Langwith’s bar, The Glasshouse. You never know, maybe the famous carol singing scene would have happened in one of Langwith’s bottom floor patio balconies?
Joe (Gregor Fisher) – Wentworth
A character who is often forgotten about but very rarely disliked in the film, is Billy Mack’s manager Joe, who I think would have been in Wentworth.
He seems like a wise character with a lot of life experience and qualifications, and I think he would have studied his postgraduate degree as a Wentworth student.
The Prime Minister (Hugh Grant) – Halifax
Finally, I think one of the films most popular characters, the Prime Minister, would have chosen Uni of York’s biggest college, Halifax, as a fresher. I am also sure that he would have danced down the stairs in a Halifax student house, just like in the iconic scene.
When you are watching Love Actually this year, perhaps you’ll see some of the characters differently imagining their lives as a Uni of York student, or you might not agree with my choices. Enjoy your annual rewatch (or multiple rewatches)!
