Four people were ‘attacked and sprayed with an unknown substance’ by the entrance to a London university campus last night. One man has been hospitalised for “head injuries”.

Police were called to the Avery Hill Campus at the University of Greenwich just after midnight. There were reports that a man had been injured. Once officers got there, they realised that three other people had also been attacked with the same substance.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said, “On Tuesday, police were called to Avery Hill Road, SE9, at 12.13am following reports that a man had been attacked and sprayed with an unknown substance.

“Officers attended the scene alongside the London Ambulance Service who treated a man for head injuries on scene before taking him to hospital. Whilst conducting enquiries on scene, officers found that three other people were sprayed with the substance.”

The substance was non-toxic. None of the people’s injuries were life-threatening. The police haven’t arrested anybody yet and are making urgent enquiries.

The University of Greenwich has shut down this entrance to the Avery Hill campus. A spokesperson for the university said, “Following a Police incident in front of our Avery Hill campus overnight, the main entrance is currently closed, although the rest of the campus is open as usual. Staff, students and visitors will be directed to an alternative entrance by stewards on arriving at the campus.”

Avery Hill Campus is in the Eltham area of south-east London. Over 1,200 students live in university accommodation in the Student Village nearby. Education and health courses are taught there.

The University of Greenwich warned that there might be delays to the university bus service today.

A spokesperson for the University of Greenwich told The Tab, “We can confirm we are assisting the police following an incident last night at our Avery Hill campus. The entrance to the campus was closed briefly, but has now re-opened. We can confirm that none of those injured in the incident were University of Greenwich Students.”
