| UPDATED

During the month of Movember aka November, students embark on different fundraising journeys to raise money for men’s mental health, prostate cancer and testicular cancer.

From the 1st November, men have grown moustaches to promote conversations around these topics and complete different challenges to raise money. Also, different sports teams and societies have come together across the month to fundraise.

Cardiff University has been doing incredibly well so far with only a few days left of the challenge. So far, the uni is placing third in the Movember UK university fundraising table.

So let’s break down the best fundraisers here at Cardiff University.

Cardiff University Rugby

This year, Cardiff University’s rugby team have broken their previous record by so far fundraising a grand total of £45,999.06, making them the top university sports team in the fundraising table. Members of the team have all fundraised in different ways, such as organising the “Moball” and completing various physical activities.

One of the members of the team, Henry Whittaker, completed a challenge of chopping a pint every day throughout the month and uploaded videos of this onto TikTok. Talking to The Cardiff Tab, he said: “I chose my challenge because I thought it would be funny for my family and friends, and they all know how important the causes Movember supports are to me.

“However, I never expected my videos to do as well as they have, and I think it’s amazing how much support Movember, in general, has had from the Cardiff community.”

Cardiff University IMG netball teams

Cardiff University’s IMG netball teams, such as Jomec, Sosci, Carbs and Bioscience, have come together to fundraise for Movember.

Members from each time fundraised by completing a 60km movement challenge across the month. The girls ran, walked and cycled the distance, smashing their target. They also organised a charity tournament where lots of teams entered, raising a total of £483.

The president of Jomec Netball Izzy Breaker, said: “The Movember tournament was not only a great success but an amazing day! Bringing friends and teams the chance to play netball all while raising for a good cause.”

In total, they have raised £6,230.86, making them the second-highest fundraiser at Cardiff University.

Cardiff University Hockey Club

This club came third in the leaderboard, fundraising £3,596.29 for Movember. The team completed a total of 1,370km across the month, completing different challenges such as running and cycling.

He said: “I decided to take part in Movember this year because this year I’ve really struggled with my mental health, pushing people away and isolating myself more and more. I’ve luckily managed to find help and slowly improve where I am mentally. I wanted to complete a challenged that not only showed myself how mentally strong I can be, especially with the help from those around me and hopefully show others that sharing the burden with others can massively help.

“During the challenge itself I had some pretty difficult parts but had an amazing group of mates that were with me to support throughout.”

The leaderboard close on 9th December so if you still want to donate, you can do so here.
