How to slay your Oxbridge interview, according to real students who did
Tips and tricks so you don’t humiliate yourself
Oxbridge interviews are just around the corner. If you’re one of the lucky few to be chosen for an interview at the University of Oxford or the University of Cambridge and you’re currently spending more time panicking than preparing, then fear not! Your worries are over! We asked a load of real current Oxbridge students how to slay the all-important interview.
Remember, Oxbridge interviews are supposed to be hard. That’s, like, the whole point. The interviews are meant to test how well you’d function in a supervision or tutorial. The interviewers are pushing you to see if you’d snap under pressure or be boring to teach. So, if they ask you some really weird questions about the loch ness monster or burning down the Classics department or the meaning of life, then that’s a good sign. It means they think you can handle it. If they ask you what your favourite colour is, you might want to take another look at the Durham prospectus.
So, here are top tips for how to survive your Oxbridge interview.
Izzy, natural sciences
“Don’t look up the interviews and ask them a question about their own research because it comes across as tactical when they want true passion.
“Instead, ask a question about a theory that is taught in the course and connect it to something you’re interested in and ask them a question on that.”
Anna, history
“My biggest tip would be to know your personal statement inside out and be prepared to talk about any aspect of it. One of my interviews focused nearly entirely on just one book from my personal statement.”
@brasenosecollege approaching your interview can be one of the most stressful parts of the entire oxbridge process!! often applicants put a lot of pressure on themselves to perform their absolute best in those 30minutes – this is your REMINDER that you really do NOT need everything to be PERFECT!!!! just be yourself & share your thought process out loud 🫶 #oxford #oxforduniversity #cambridge #cambridgeuniversity #interview #oxfordinterview #oxbridge #ucas

“Biggest tip for my course and most STEM subjects – learn how to think out loud. Most of the interview will be technical, and you’ll be asked to solve problems on the spot. It doesn’t matter if you don’t know the answer. The main thing is to show your thought process. You want the interviewers to know that you are able to break a problem down to the basics and think logically, using your existing knowledge.
“I-want-to-study-engineering.org is a good website for practice!”
Sacha, natural sciences
“For more STEM-based interviews, every interview involves sketching a graph, so practising that skill is essential.”
Emilia, geography
“Ask a question about what was said in the interview so it looks like you were paying attention and you actually find these topics interesting.”

“I think it’s useful to get a lot of practice just talking about your subject. You can practise with a friend, parent or teacher so that you’re used to articulating the parts of your subject you’re passionate about!”
Emily, natural sciences
“Sketch graphs.”
