Lancaster panel delves into gender, witchcraft, and historical perspectives
An award-winning author will explore witchcraft accusations and trials in conversation in Lancaster
“Gender, Witchcraft and History: A Conversation with A.K Blakemore”, the second annual Lancaster University History and Creative Writing Lecture, will be held at The Storey on 18th November at 6pm.
This event will involve Lancaster University historians and creative writing experts speaking to A.K. Blakemore about her writing process.
The lecture is organised by the Lancaster University departments of History and English Literature & Creative Writing, supported by the Lancaster University Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Health Hub.
A.K Blakemore is an award-winning English author, poet and translator and has received rave reviews for her capacity to bring history to life through gorgeous prose, in-depth research and vivid imagination of the inner lives of those frequently hidden in historical records. The lecture will draw on Blakemore’s “The Manningtree Witches” and Lancaster’s history of witchcraft to explore what it means to write historical fiction about the most disempowered members of society.
It will also examine how writers of fiction can give voices to those victimised in the past, and how to elaborate on the experience of mostly poor, single women; only highlighted in hostile sources written by wealthy men.
This event will additionally look at Blakemore’s most recent book, titled: “The Glutton”, which explores another marginalised figure, living during the French Revolution.
Both The Manningtree Witches and The Glutton, will be available for sale at this event.
Admission is free, but registration is required. Registration to the event can be found on Eventbrite, here.
