Lesley Manville explains how Grotesquerie’s toxic men’s rights group links to the US election

The group is filled with men who are anti #MeToo and ‘exhausted by pronouns’

Lesley Manville has shed some light on the harrowing themes explored in the final episode of Grotesquerie – and how that scary ‘men’s rights group’ is a cautionary tale about how to vote in today’s presidential election. Grotesquerie explored a lot of dark themes across its episodes, but it was that twist that all the men in Lois’ life were actually part of such a dangerous group that was the most frightening. Lesley Manville, who played Nurse Redd / Cherry Redd in Grotesquerie, talks about how it’s actually a state of the nation story and how that group in particular is a reminder to choose wisely in the election.

The final episode of Grotesquerie sees Marshall be accused of sexual assault by his students. As he prepares to take his own life, Travis Kelce’s character Ed finds him and introduces him to the Mexicali Men’s Group. This group of men, which includes pretty much every major male character in the show, including Dr Charlie and Lois’ therapists, are over pronouns and feel like there is a witch-hunt against men. It’s all a bit too real. You just know they all listen to Joe Rogan.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Lesley Manville spoke about the important messaging behind Grotesquerie, and how a cautionary tale can be learned when casting votes in the election.”

Manville explained “Be careful what you vote for. Think very carefully before you put your tick in the ballot box. Listen, it’s a brutal series, for all of its many, many layers. There is a very dark picture and message going on, and I think that that’s there in big bold letters. And I think that’s partly why Ryan wanted to do the series. You could say, ‘Well, it isn’t a typical state-of-the nation piece of drama.’ But in many ways, it kind of is. There’s a slightly prophetic nature about the whole series. But yes, think carefully, Americans, when you cast your vote.”
