Male fans left feeling ‘intimidated’ after alleged interrogation by security at The Engine Shed

Male fans have said they were left “feeling intimidated” after they were allegedly interrogated by security at The Engine Shed.

They claim they were pulled to the side, asked what they were doing at the concert, and then questioned about whether they were fans of The Last Dinner Party, who were booked to perform that night.

The Last Dinner Party is a British Indie Rock band from London, formed in 2021, with audiences being quickly hooked on the band’s sound.

The up-and-coming group had a scheduled performance in Lincoln on September 28th at The Engine Shed. Unfortunately, due to sickness within the group, the performance didn’t go ahead.

However, it has been reported that this wasn’t the only thing to go wrong that night.

It has been alleged that in a supposed bid to promote the safety of the young women in attendance, members of the door team at The Engine Shed subjected some of the men in the queue to harsh questioning before they were allowed in.

One man took to X to share that he’d “rocked up there tonight at 8.45 on my own, no queue, I got asked how long I had liked them for, and to name my favourite song. I thought it was a bit strange and the first time I’ve ever felt like I’m on mastermind to get into a gig.”

Another said that they were, “whisked away, searched, asked condescending questions”.

Allegedly only men who were attending the gig alone were subjected to this treatment with one man taking to X to say “I saw one young guy in a black cap whisked away quickly with security shouting that he needed searching. I was with my wife and didn’t get searched or interrogated, but it felt intimidating.”

The Engine Shed has since released a statement of apology on Instagram regarding its conduct, claiming that they “pride [themselves] on and are committed to operating a safe, secure, inclusive, and welcoming venue for all [their] guests.”

The venue added: “We are aware of reports on social media that the entry procedure utilised [on September 28th], which indicates that after information was provided to our security team about incidents are a previous The Last Dinner Party gig, the venue management made an ad-hoc change to our policy. Although the policy was changed with the right intentions, this change resulted in the unacceptable treatment of some guests, and The Engine Shed would like to fully apologise to anyone affected.”

It also noted that it has “instigated an independent investigation” in order to review reports and then to get recommendations on actions that need to be taken.

The statement then continued by saying these recommendations will be implemented by the venue, and staff will receive further training.

It concluded: “If you were affected by our entry policy at this event to please contact [email protected].”

The Last Dinner Party took to social media to say that “everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend [their] shows” and that they were “appalled and disappointed that anyone was made to feel otherwise.”

However, a second statement was released by the Engine Shed due to the band’s cancellation, saying: “The Last Dinner Party’s performance last night (28th September 2024) was cancelled at the last minute due to a band member unexpectedly falling ill and being unable to perform.

“This decision was not taken lightly as the band and promoter were hopeful that the member would recover from the illness to be able to perform. This was beyond the venue’s control, and we are waiting to hear from the band and promoter on what action we take.

“We appreciate how disappointing this is for those who had tickets and are working incredibly hard to provide an update as soon as possible.”

The venue also apologised and explained that the event would also be rescheduled.
