A sudden storm off Sicily whipped up a waterspout, which caused the rapid sinking of the anchored Bayesian yacht in the early hours of Monday morning. When a nearby yacht captained by Karsten Borner saw a flair, he went over to where the Bayesian was and found a lifeboat filled with 15 people, some injured. Borner then alerted the coastguard who discovered the yacht had sunk to 50 metres near a fishing village off Sicily.
Who is Mike Lynch?
The British billionaire tech tycoon who is missing aftee the yacht sinking off Sicily has previously been described as “the British Bill Gates.” He has recently been involved in legal issues, which in June saw him acquitted of a US fraud trial related to the $11 billion sale of his company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard in 2011 – of which Mike Lynch has personally made $800 million from. Lynch also has a bill from Hewlett-Packard winning a case in 2022, regarding a civil case in which it is seeking $4 billion.
One of the missing is Christopher Morvillo – one of Mike Lynch’s US lawyers at Clifford Chance who was a federal prosecutor in New York in the aftermath of 9/11.
Who survived?
One of the survivors, Charlotte Golunski, has shared the harrowing story of how she briefly lost her one year old daughter Sofia in the water as they abandoned the Baleysian for the lifeboat. “For two seconds I lost the baby in the sea, then I immediately held her again in the fury of the waves,” she told Giornale di Sicilia. “I held her tightly, tightly to me, while the sea was raging. So many were screaming. Fortunately, the lifeboat inflated and 11 of us managed to get on it.”
What is a waterspout that caused the sinking?
Waterspouts are essentially tornadoes that happen over water. They operate and can cause equal amounts of damage as a land tornado, and it is this that caused the Bayesian to sink.
