Scandal over Viral video of PSNI dumping woman in street
Disturbing footage of unacceptable police behaviour towards a vulnerable individual on St Patrick’s Day in Derry
St Patrick’s Day is notorious for having an increased amount of police presence across Ireland, similar to the celebrations on the 12th and 13th July.
Despite the expectation of the police to be there to protect the welfare and safety of citizens, footage from Derry shows the controversial actions of two police officers.
The footage, recorded on mobile phone by a bystander, has exploded on social media since it was uploaded on Tuesday evening.
The video shows two policemen carrying an intoxicated woman from the centre of John Street in Derry to a bus lane. Although the policemen carried the woman away from oncoming traffic, neither took action to talk to the woman or enquire into the safety of the individual.
They both then proceed to get back into their car and drive off with no further aid to the woman given. Individuals from a local business took it upon themselves to look after the vulnerable person.
The Belfast Telegraph has confirmed this morning that the woman in question was 23 year old Brigid Mongan, a member of the Travelling community.

This case has caused great uneasiness concerning the trust that society places upon the PSNI and there has been dismay at the unacceptable attitude of these policemen in question.
Laura McCormick, a Queen’s student, said she thinks the incident makes the police seem “less approachable.”
The policemen have been identified by the PSNI and the occurrence has been referred to the Ombudsman who are conducting an independent investigation.

Holylands revellers were monitored carefully by PSNI this Monday
In Belfast, there was an increased amount of police vans and men in the popular student area of the Holylands during St Patrick’s Day celebrations.
Despite the majority of partygoers in the Belfast area finding police presence to be positive, the footage from Derry, which has gone viral with over 2,000 shares, have caused many to question the “duty of care” that police are supposed to have.
