Nine hospitalized after dodgy drugs in Jesmond

Concern arises after second drug related incident in two months happens in Jesmond.

Paramedics rescued nine people from a house on Osborne Road  after they took the drug PMA, which is used by dealers as a substitute for ecstasy.

While eight people were shortly released from hospital, it is believed that one is still receiving treatment.

A similar incident happened previously in November, when 12 people were admitted to hospital after taking LSD at a Jesmond house party.

PMA is sometimes used to cut ecstasy pills, but it is much stronger. A man died in September after taking pills containing PMA at Manchester’s Warehouse Project.

A description of the drug on Talk to Frank says: “PMA is similar to MDMA (the chemical in ecstasy). It can make you feel alert, alive and full of energy. Its similarity means that PMA is actually sometimes sold as ecstasy. However, PMA is more poisonous and can kill at lower doses than MDMA. Also like MDMA, it can cause a fatal rise in body temperature.”

It was found by the BBC that PMA is up to ten times stronger than ecstasy and has been involved in more than 20 deaths last year.

Northumbria Police’s Ged Noble warned: “Anyone thinking of taking any drug, particularly this tablet, should not. PMA has particularly nasty side effects and can lead to fatal overdoses even in small quantities.”
