Largest photonics and electronics centre in the UK opening on campus TODAY

A new photonics and electronics institute is opening on campus today – the largest in the COUNTRY.

The new Zepler Institute – named after Professor Eric Ernest Zepler, who founded what is now the University’s ECS department back in 1947 – is a multidisciplinary research centre that will combine expertise from the photonics, nanoscience and quantum technology fields, among others.

The Zepler Institute will allow the University to build on its already world-leading reputation in web science research – more specifically creating an environment in which research about ultra-high bandwidth communication technologies can take place.

The launch is being led by Professor Sir David Payne, director of the University’s Optoelectronics Research Centre, and one of the most influential researchers in the world.

Dean of Physical and Applied Sciences Professor Dame Wendy Hall, who will be introducing the speakers, had this to say:

The formation of the Zepler Institute ensures that University of Southampton continues to make pioneering breakthroughs and discoveries that will meet society’s global communication challenges. It also puts us in a leading position to develop the future of the Internet.
