Trends from the Met Gala you can actually wear in real life without looking insane

A little inspo here, a little inspo there

Say a prayer for those of us who had to sit through all of our friends transform in "fashion experts" on Twitter and Facebook for last night's Met Gala, even though they've worn those Forever 21 jeans three times this week (same, but still).

Yesterday's Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute benefit did more than fuck up my commute home by siphoning off half of Fifth Avenue to make for like Bella Hadid's limo or whatever — it gave us all some summer styles cues, some overt and some…avant garde?

Officially, the theme was The Art of the In-Between, homage to the Costume Institute's exhibit on Comme des Garçon founder Rei Kawkubo. Some (Rhianna, Amy Fine Collins, Solange) followed the theme closely, some took a more "I'm just gonna look cute lol whatever!" line. Either way, though, the celebrities, socialites and editors delivered inspiration.

Tiny takeaways from each of the best outfits can complete your summer outfits better than a thousand Pinterest fashion boards ever could:

Rihanna: Lace-up heels and bright pink makeup

Rihanna, the perennial best-dressed of the benefit, did it again in a head-to-toe look by the designer of honor and even though it might be a little much for a rooftop bar (as if you could even get your hands on this couture), but her accessories and makeup are so do-able. Bright pink eyes and cheeks (also seen on Selena Gomez) is a tropical, trendy and accessible. A slightly less in-your-face version of her licorice-looking lace-up heels is a sexy summer go-to for toe-dipping into the trend.

Dakota Johnson: Bondage for everyday (or every night, no judgement)

Harnesses!! Do you have a fashion harness? Get one. Pop a Dakota-inspired harness over plan, tight white tee and it just amps the sex tf up without making it look like you've tried to put it in his face like a cop badge — he will still want to pound it like a hashtag, though.

Cara Delevingne : Frosty silver and sexed-up menswear

Silver can be for summer too, especially when found in subtle touches like flatform heels, beach totes and toenails. Nothing's chicer than a hoe-ified blazer too, whether you've found one made to show off your goods or just repurposing an oversized one actually made for men.

Selena Gomez: Structured florals and your enemy's ex

Florals? For summer? Groundbreaking! But seriously, even though Selena just wore something basic and cute by Coach (she's the face of the design house), it's still something I would really want to wear. The slit and boning in the dress's bodice coupled with her choker and CDG-style hot pink eyes keep it from looking too precious. OH, and tonguing The Weeknd while both your exes look on is always in style.

Liu Wen: Upcycled, formal denim

Liu!!! Queen of everything, the supermodel we need right now. Her pairing of a formal, sexy, gem-covered mesh bodice with a destroyed denim apron wasn't just gorgeous and on-theme — it's the most wearable summer trend ever. Taking a formal top, be it a bodysuit or a satin cami, and tucking it into a pair or medium wash mom-jeans or a destroyed midi-skirt is cool and sexy and will look great on your Instagram.

Migos: Major accessory layering and Kurt Cobain shades

Migos went classic and sleek in black tuxes but their accessories are fun and easy to add to summer time #lewks. Obviously tangles of silver jewelry and lots of rings is probably something you're already doing, but Takeoff (the Migo to the far left) is wearing some Kurt Cobain-inspired white plastic sunnies you're going to see EVERYWHERE this summer.

Amy Fine Collins: Gendered clothing is for suckers

Leave it to International Best-Dressed Hall of Fame honoree Amy Fine Collins to wear something on-theme, weird and wonderful. Part of the Rei Kawkubo exhibition was grouped as Male / Female (remember that in-between juxtaposition theme) and Amy's look takes it very literally. Why the fuck can't you wear a skirt over pants of a tux jacket with pearls? Fuck it. There are no rules. Like literally none.

Katy Perry: Underwear as outerwear

https://www.instagram.com/p/BTmBb5VlN3v/

It was her afterparty look, but it still slayed. Katy was one of the Gala's chairpeople so of course she had to go balls to the wall (what is the female version of this? Clits to the bricks…? I'm so sorry) with an extravagant hooded look. Her outfit's best feature, though, was the putty-colored garter fixed to sheer tights layered over fishnets. Of course, fishnets have seen a major resurgence but maybe it's time to bust garters out for casual daywear too.

Kim Kardashian: Minimalism can be…fun?

Poor Kimmy. What a stark contrast to her 2016 naked dress. This is probably a part of her new commitment to living relatively low-key after her violent robbery and it partially makes me sad because I know how extra Kim loves to be but let's face it — it's also A LOOK. Remember how hot peasant shirts were in sixth grade? Find a white version and you've got the look.
