Brunel joins the University of London federation as the group’s 18th member

The Uxbridge-based university will also be changing its name

Brunel has joined the University of London and will be renamed.

Brunel, University of London, which has a campus in Uxbridge, joins 17 other institutions from around the capital.

The move aims to “open up new opportunities for collaboration” according to the University of London.

Its entry into the federation means students will be able to gain access to study spaces across London including Senate House as well as University of London accommodation.

In a statement Professor Wendy Thomson, vice-chancellor of the University of London, said: “We are delighted to welcome Brunel University London to the University of London federation. Brunel has a strong global outlook and is ranked among the UK’s top institutions internationally.

“Its impressive education and research portfolio, particularly in engineering and sciences, will enable the federation to achieve even greater impact across London and beyond.

“Brunel’s strong ties to west London communities and industries will also expand the federation’s civic reach, allowing us to increase engagement with this vibrant part of the capital.”  

The University of London began in 1836 with founding members King’s College London and University College London, Brunel has now become the first new member since City, University of London in 2016.

On the merger, Professor Andrew Jones, vice-chancellor of Brunel, University of London, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to have officially joined such an esteemed and historic federation of research-intensive universities. Brunel’s international outlook, diversity, research excellence and industry-facing education will strengthen the University of London’s global reputation, and bring many new and exciting opportunities for collaboration with other member institutions.”
