A building survey was carried out following the recent tragedy

Following the awful events of 14th June, in which at least 80 people died in a tower block of public housing flats, universities across the country have been reviewing the materials used to clad their accommodation and office buildings.

The Tab has revealed a number of confirmed cases of student housing being covered in Grenfell-style cladding at five universities across the UK.

In a statement, a spokesperson told this publication that UoB did not own any buildings of a comparable construction but that, as a precautionary measure, surveyors reviewed specific University buildings which do have external cladding.

All of them were subsequently found to comply with the relevant Building Regulations and Standards applicable at the time of installation with the University informing The Tab that: “The materials used successfully passed the test criteria for their situation, location and the circumstances they are used in.”

The University went on to add: “University owned buildings and University allocated accommodation are regularly inspected by fire risk assessors” and that “We are currently working closely with our partner providers of student accommodation in the city to confirm assurance with regard to any cladding utilised on their buildings.”
