MAFS Australia addresses Timothy’s casting and admits his criminal past was missed
Background checks failed to pick up that he was previously a multi-million dollar drug smuggler
Hayley SoenIn the last day, shocking news about Timothy from MAFS Australia 2024 and his criminal past as a drug smuggler who spent time in maximum-security prisons has been revealed. Off the back of this, many have been questioning how Timothy was cast on the show in the first place.
Timothy was sentenced in 2006 to a year in jail for trafficking commercial amounts of drugs in the US. It’s been revealed he was living in Vancouver at the time, and would fly large amounts of marijuana across the country in a helicopter. Following being caught by police in the US, Timothy spent time in super-maximum prisons in Washington State, California, Colorado, Oklahoma and New Mexico.
In the end, Timothy was a million-dollar drug smuggler. He’s said he was paid up to $100k per short trip, where the drugs were loaded up into his helicopter, before he would fly them on.

There are background checks on cast members for the show, and Channel 9 has admitted these failed to pick up Timothy’s criminal past ahead of him being casted for the experiment.
“All participants on MAFS, including Timothy, undergo extensive background checks including police checks in countries in which they have resided,” the channel said in a statement to The Tab. “In Timothy’s case, checks were conducted in Australia and Canada and were clear. It was only this week that Timothy disclosed he was arrested in the US.”
Speaking out about his past, Timothy said: “I’m sorry for what I did. I’m sorry to everyone I hurt.” He added: “If I could go back and change it, I would. There’s no question I’d change it. I did something very stupid and I paid the price. I paid the ultimate price.”
