Kim Kardashian is suing French police over intimate leaked footage of her
A 'breach of privacy' complaint was filed
In 2016, Kim Kardashian was robbed in Paris. It was a traumatic event that left her physically unharmed but deeply shaken.
Now, almost a decade later, she’s taking legal action against French authorities over footage that came out shortly after the robbery.
A video has emerged that she says was recorded without her consent and leaked in the aftermath. She claims this additional violation worsened her trauma.
Kim was robbed at gunpoint in 2016
On the night of October 3, 2016, Kim was staying at Hotel de Pourtales during Paris Fashion Week when masked men posing as police broke in.
Armed, they threatened her, tied her up, gagged her, and made off with millions of dollars’ worth of jewellery, including her $4 million engagement ring, per Reuters.
The Kardashians star was left terrified. In the days and weeks following, the robbery dominated headlines, not just for the violence and loss, but also for how the story unfolded in the media.
Many details of the invasion, the stolen items, and Kardashian’s own victimisation were shared and discussed, some through official reports, some via leaks, and some through speculation.
One of the most controversial leaks was a video showing her immediately after the break-in, in a state of vulnerability as she wears a dressing gown, using a phone.
That video fueled rumours and speculation, including allegations that the robbery might have been staged, per The Times. Kim has long maintained her ordeal was real and has expressed how deeply those leaks hurt her.
Now, she’s suing the French police
Fast forward to 2025, after several of the robbers have been convicted. Kim has filed a civil action in Paris against French police and others for breach of privacy, over the release and distribution of that intimate video and other sensitive material from the investigation, per The Times.
Her legal team argues that the video was made without her knowledge or consent, that it was shared unlawfully and that its release magnified her distress, and also posed safety risks.
In May, a French court convicted eight individuals for their roles in the robbery, with sentences between three and ten years. Many of these were suspended sentences, due to age, time already served, or health conditions, reports Reuters.
Kim is seeking accountability not just from the robbers, but from those who handled the aftermath, particularly the law enforcement agencies and officers who she says failed to protect her privacy.
Via The Times, Kim’s French lawyers said that in 2016, they had filed a complaint for breach of privacy “against the author and distributors of a video made without her knowledge, as well as against the police officers who were carrying out the first observations in the residence, the site of the assault.”
