How to spot a nightmare flatmate at UofG
Recognise the red flags early and save yourselves from hell
Moving into shared accommodation with strangers is an interesting experience to say the least. For some it’s how they meet their future friends for life. But for others it can lead to horror stories they will never be able to let go of. These are the main warning signs to look out for so you don’t end up spending all your time with someone you will eventually dread running into in JMS.
Can’t clean to save their life

Obviously moving out for the first time comes with an adjustment period especially in the midst of a hectic Freshers’ Week. But if someone’s dishes are still piling up weeks later, you might be in for a hellish year. Better to address these issues sooner than later or you won’t be able to be near the kitchen without getting a whiff of some mouldy pesto pasta that’s been sat out for days. Whatever you do to address it, just make sure not to accidentally sign up to live with them in second year or you will be getting visits from the mice in woodlands.
Attachment issues/ the instant BFF

Getting really close to someone can happen naturally especially if you’re stuck in a dark and smelly Murano flat with them. But doing everything together everyday is a bit intense. You may have met your future bridesmaid but most likely once the magical bubble of fresher’s week wears off, not being able to get to the toilet without them following you like a lost puppy may start to get on your nerves a bit more. Just make sure to not close yourself of from making other friends too early.
Uses your stuff
Have your pans mysteriously appeared in the sink covered in food you don’t remember cooking? Then you might have a flatmate with a bit of a boundaries issue. Needing to borrow the odd thing here and there is okay, but it shouldn’t become the norm. Especially if they don’t ask first or clean it up after. Pair this with some of your meal prep disappearing from the fridge that is a nightmare combination to deal with.
No volume control

Hearing intense techno music through your bedroom wall, then bumping into 20 randoms in your kitchen on your midnight toilet trip is something you may only come across in uni accommodation. Finding out your flatmate is obsessed with hosting afters could be the biggest warning sign that you will not get along. Some people also just don’t realise how thin the walls are and that everyone can hear everything happening in the room next to them. But trust me loud music could become the least of your worries if you catch my drift…
If anyone reading this has encountered any version of the flatmates mentions, please know that you’re in my thought’s prayers and trust that your flatmates aren’t everything. You will eventually find the people you click with at university in your own weird and wonderful way, no matter how long it takes.
