Lizzie Borden left $32k to animal charity in her will, and the rest of her money was divided

Lizzie Borden became incredibly rich after her father’s death, but who did she leave all her money to when she died? Here are the full details of her will. 

After being acquitted of the murders in 1893, Borden bought a huge house in Fall River with her sister Emma, which she named Maplecroft, and lived there until she died from pneumonia in 1927, aged 66. 

She made her will in 1926, just a year before her death, and was worth over $250,000, which is the equivalent of around $6.2 million in today’s money. 

Lizzie left her money and belongings to some very specific people, including various animal rescue charities. Here is a full breakdown.

• $500 to the City of Fall River
• $3,000 split between her housekeeper and servants 
• $10,000 to her business manager and financial advisor Charles Cook
• $30,000 to the Animal Rescue League of Fall River and $2,000 to the Animal Rescue League of Washington D.C.
• Three diamond rings, a diamond and sapphire brooch, a mahogany desk and chairs, a library desk and reading lamp, rugs, books, china, pictures and one half of her share in the AJ Borden Building to her closest friend Helen Leighton
• Diamond and amethyst ring and the other half of her share in the AJ Borden Building to her cousin Grace Howe
• $5,000 and a diamond and sapphire ring to her close friend Margaret Streeter
• $5,000 to close friend Minnie Lacombe and $2,000 to her son Howard
• $36,000 to various other named friends, cousins and old schoolmates 

Borden made a very specific note in her will that she hadn’t left anything to her sister Emma. They had a major falling out in 1905 and lived the rest of their lives estranged. 

“I have not given my sister Emma Borden anything as she had her share of her father’s estate and is supposed to have enough to make her comfortable,” the will says.
