A pair of identical twins got mistaken for mother and daughter by a stranger, all because of one tiny difference in their appearance.

It’s not always easy to tell siblings apart or know who’s the oldest, but when twins are identical it normally takes out most of the guesswork.

However, identical twin sisters Heather and Haylie claim they look so different that a woman mistook them for mother and daughter, and it was basically down to the way their skin looks.

Heather’s TikTok explaining the situation has racked up over 15 million views and nearly two million likes. She revealed to Newsweek: “I was at the store with my sister, and a woman walked in front of us and said, ‘Oh, how wonderful—mom and daughter.’ We told her we were twins and we all laughed it off. She actually never mentioned which one she thought was the ‘mom.'”

This isn’t the first time the twins have been mistaken for mother and daughter. “I met my sister for lunch one day, and she was dressed in a suit and I was in sweatpants. The server asked if she was my mom,” Heather said.

Comments suggesting Heather looks “much older” than Haylie have opened up a wider conversation online about the role of motherhood in aging.

One user said: “Best AD ever for not getting married and having kids.”

Jacob commented: “You *were identical twins”.

Alyssa added: “This happened to me and my identical twin”.

It wasn’t exactly what Heather expected when she posted the video, thinking the TikTok would just capture a lighthearted, funny moment between the pair.

Although the sisters lead pretty different lives, they attest to still being very close. Heather’s “extremely smart and successful” sister Haylie is a cat lady with loads of different hobbies, whereas Heather is married and spends much of her free time looking after her toddlers.

Haylie’s expensive skincare routine has also been quizzed as the potential reason for the sisters’ different appearances. The company who makes the products, Marini Skin Solutions, has now started a partnership with Heather.

The skincare brand has encouraged the twin to share her “glow up” experience online whilst using its products.

Despite some of the comments, Heather continues to be positive about her lifestyle: “Life gets busy with toddlers, dogs, having a family and working full time. My life is beautiful and rewarding. I wouldn’t change it for the world, or for my wrinkles!”
