Here’s a full rundown of the messy Made By Mitchell and Malachi drama on TikTok

I’ve got you covered

Makeup influencer Malachi recently caused a stir on TikTok after exposing Made by Mitchell. His four-part series has millions of views, and i’ve got all the key info here so you’re caught up on the drama.

The drama started when Malachi won Mitchell’s huge competition

Mitchell announced a global beauty competition on the 15th of March 2023 called A Full Face of Colour Case. The winner would create their own collection with Made By Mitchell, and even earn commission off the products sold.

Malachi was announced as the winner and promised a call with Mitchell on the 23rd of May. On the day, Malachi claims Mitchell rescheduled for two days later, saying he’d been too busy and forgotten his promise. During the call, Malachi says Mitchell invited him to Liverpool to talk through ideas in June.

When Malachi arrives, he says he’s told that Mitchell would be a few hours late. Eventually, he gets to the office and is able to talk through his ideas. He’d brought an art book and sketchbook with him.

Malachi  says he was told his collection would be 10 or 15 products. He claims that Mitchell says they were aiming for a Christmas release for the collection, as products sell best at that time of year.

Before Malachi leaves, Mitchell puts together a package of Made By Mitchell products for him. He shows how much he’s giving away on TikTok Live. Malachi forgets his sketchbook, art book and makeup package, but he claims Mitchell promised him they would be posted to his home the next day. Malachi also says he was promised a contract at their next meeting.

Things started to go downhill…

Weeks go by and Malachi says he doesn’t receive his package or either of his books. At the end of August, Malachi sends Mitchell a frustrated message. He explains that he still hasn’t heard anything more about the collab and hasn’t received anything through the mail. According to Malachi, Mitchell then explains that these things take time and it will all start moving forward soon. Malachi doesn’t reach out again until October. He claims he gets no response, and leaves it for the rest of 2023.

It went from a collection to a box set

Malachi doesn’t get a response until March – a whole year after he was announced as the competition winner.

He claims that Sarah, a member of Mitchell’s team, finally sends him an NDA. Holly, another member of Mitchell’s team, sets up a call to talk about the collection. Malachi says he is then asked to share his ideas… again. On this call, Malachi says he’s told they want to do a box set instead of a full collection. He hates this idea, but decides to sit on it. According to Malachi, Holly says they’ll send him some samples for the box set.

After the meeting, Malachi says Mitchell sends him an email thanking him for his ideas. Malachi says he tells Mitchell he doesn’t want to do a box set – he wouldn’t be able to afford it as a consumer and he wants to create something accessible.

It gets worse. Instead of being paid directly for the box set, Malachi says Sarah tells him he would be paid in commission sales through TikTok Shop. This wasn’t the life-changing money he says Mitchell promised him.

Malachi says he is eventually invited to another meeting in Liverpool in September 2024. He says there’s no sign of a contract, and he’s told to give even more of his ideas, which he does.

From bad to worse

Malachi wouldn’t be in contact with the Made by Mitchell team again until January of this year. He says he has a phone call with Sarah, where he explains the promises that were made by Mitchell of  “life-changing money”.

After another couple weeks, Malachi says he’s put in contact with Mitchell’s personal business manager, Janine. He says they go back and forth over email for a while, but he still sees no contract. Malachi claims every time he chases up about the contract, Janine promises it’s coming soon. It isn’t until the end of May that he finally receives it.

It didn’t match up to what Malachi was  promised. According to him, the contract was only slightly better than the TikTok Shop deal and meant that he’d be getting “screwed over”. He sends Mitchell a long message describing exactly how he feels. Malachi was expecting a “financially and socially lie-changing” collaboration, as he claims was verbally promised by Mitchell. He was still receiving TikTok comments asking what had happened with the collab, and had put many opportunities on hold to prioritise the collection.

Malachi finally gives up

When Mitchell eventually responds, he keeps it brief. Malachi claims Mitchell says that from then on, communication would be through Janine, and wishes Malachi the best.

On the 9th of July, Malachi finally walks away. He messages Mitchell one last time, saying the collection was not close to what was promised.

Mitchell’s response and apology

In his response video, Mitchell addresses all the drama. He admits that he bit off more than he could chew, and he shouldn’t have done the competition the way he did. He also apologises to Malachi and says he’s still open to a collaboration. Good luck with that.
