‘I’m glad you told me’: Donald Trump reacts to Sydney Sweeney’s Republican ties being exposed
Incoming: Sydney Sweeney MAGA hat advert
Sydney Sweeney has really been through the proverbial mincer this month: First, her American Eagle advert was dubbed “eugenics propaganda”, then she was outed as a secret Republican, and now she’s got Donald Trump on her side.
This whole crazy saga was started when Sydney Sweeney starred in an American Eagle jeans advert that bragged about good genes. The advertisement was ripped apart from every angle, from the white-centric messaging to the fact that a product for women was seemingly marketed towards men.
Then, as both Sydney’s team and American Eagle dealt with the fallout of the controversial campaign, numerous publications exposed her ties to the Republican Party. According to publicly available records reviewed by The Guardian, Sydney registered to vote as a Republican in Florida on 14 June 2024.
🚨BREAKING: President Trump just announced he "LOVES" Sydney Sweeney and thinks her ad is "FANTASTIC" if she's a registered Republican.
I agree, Mr. Best President!

Donald Trump responded to Sydney Sweeney’s MAGA era
Amidst comparisons between Sydney Sweeney’s Republican ties and “finding a fork in the kitchen”, Donald Trump reacted to the news on the runway in Allentown, Pennsylvania, on Sunday.
“She’s a registered Republican?” the president asked. “Now I love her ad.”
When the journalist confirmed the statement, Trump smirked, “Is that Right?” before adding, “You’d be surprised how many people are Republicans. That’s one I wouldn’t have known, but I’m glad you told me that. If Sydney Sweeney is a registered Republican, I think her ad is fantastic.”
People found the moment incredibly jarring, as one person said on Twitter: “You know the ad campaign was in the wrong because the worst people on the planet are defending it.”

“Sydney girl, it’s over for you,” another said, as a third added, “Sydney Sweeney has the literal devil defending her, and ppl think the ad still isn’t wrong?”
Oddly, this is not the first time Sydney Sweeney has found herself on the wrong side of the political aisle. In 2023, after being pictured at a party surrounded by MAGA fanboys (and girls, admittedly), Sydney responded to the backlash without actually citing her political opinions.
“An innocent celebration … has turned into an absurd political statement, which was not the intention,” she said at the time.
The next time we see Sydney – providing she hasn’t got an advert lined up with the NRA – will be in the conclusion of Euphoria. You know, the one about a biracial woman with mental health issues, her transgender girlfriend, and cutting commentary on toxic masculinity. Republican red doesn’t quite fit the vibe.
