Jenny Han ‘reveals’ who Belly chooses in The Summer I Turned Pretty season three ending

The Summer I Turned Pretty season three is finally here, and while only the first two episodes have dropped, it’s already shaping up to be an emotional rollercoaster.

Now streaming on Prime Video, this latest season is based on We’ll Always Have Summer, the third and final book in Jenny Han’s bestselling trilogy. And if you’ve read the books, you’ll know we’re in for some seriously heart-wrenching moments.

As always, the show follows Belly as she tries to make sense of her love life, torn between the Fisher brothers, Conrad and Jeremiah. In season three, things kick off with Belly and Jeremiah stronger than ever… until everything crumbles. Belly finds out Jeremiah has cheated on her, and it all goes downhill fast. After a messy and emotional breakup, it somehow escalates to the shocker of all shockers: Belly and Jeremiah are engaged. Belly, my girl… too soon, no?

Anyway, the third episode drops today, and people are buzzing. And just when we thought we might finally get some clarity, Jenny Han herself has hinted at who Belly chooses at the end of The Summer I Turned Pretty season three. Ever since season one aired, the biggest question has been whether the TV show will follow the books. And well, Jenny might’ve just given us the answer or at least part of it.

So, who does Belly end up with in the books?

Well, surprise surprise, it’s Conrad. Always has been. The first boy she slow danced with, the first she cried over, the first she ever truly loved.

Jenny Han has spoken openly about how unforgettable first love can be, and for Belly, that’s Conrad.

“I have a stronger memory of high school love than I do of some people in my 20s,” Jenny told TIME in 2022. “There’s something so potent and powerful about being really young, never having been bruised by love before, and going into it so wholeheartedly without fear. You can get a lot more hurt by the experience, but I also think there’s so much you gain.”

In the books, years after cancelling her wedding with Jeremiah, Belly marries Conrad at Cousins Beach. And instead of rushing off to the reception, they run straight into the ocean, just like they used to as kids. The final scene is dreamy: Conrad carrying Belly into the waves, saying, “I go wherever you go.” Swoon.

But who will Belly choose in the show’s third season?

Well, Jenny’s made things very interesting. In a recent appearance on Wild Card with Rachel Martin, Rachel suggested that Belly would eventually have to pick between the brothers. Jenny interrupted with, “Well, she doesn’t. I don’t think she has to choose one.”

She went on to explain, “That is the tragedy of the story, is that no matter what, you’re going to be hurting somebody that you love dearly.”

In another interview with Entertainment Weekly, Jenny teased what makes a great love triangle, “A successful love triangle is one where, no matter what happens, people are going to be devastated and heartbroken. If the answer feels really clear and easy, then there’s no real conflict. No matter what you do, someone’s going to be hurt by it.”

Jenny’s also confirmed that season three won’t be a copy-and-paste of the book. She said, “There are going to be surprises. There are the things that they know and then there are things they think they know, and then there’s going to be, hopefully, things that surprise them.”

So, even if you’ve read the books cover to cover, you definitely don’t know everything that’s coming. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.
