Iconic Cathays pub Gassy’s to close down by the end of June

‘For students, it was a safe and familiar and place to unwind. With venues like Gassy’s closing, it feels like that spirit is fading’

Gassy’s, on Salisbury Road in the centre of Cathays, is closing down on by the end of June.

The pub which stands opposite from Misfits offers pub grub from 12pm to 7pm, and a wide selection of spirits, beer, cider and all the essentials for a night out pre club, or a chill daytime drink.

A sign on the draft beers and ciders reads: “Due to closing down we have reduced draught stock”, as the venue limits its options to Inch’s, Neck Oil, Berries and Cherries Old Mout Cider and Birra Moretti.

Sad faces have been placed on top of the draughts which are no longer being used.

Due to the closure, Gassy’s has also reduced its menu down to the basics of pub grub. The limited menu includes chicken wraps, burgers, even a vegan one, pizzas, and continues to offer wing Wednesday before its closure.

Many of the spirits behind the bar have been stripped away with limited options available, including Malibu, and Jack Daniel’s, as well as some wines.

All branding and boards which used to grace the walls of the venue have been removed, leaving a mural of Cardiff to look over the soon to be closed pub.

In response to the pub’s pending closure a Cardiff University student said: “For students, it was a safe and familiar and place to unwind. With venues like Gassy’s closing, it feels like that spirit is fading.

“We [students] need spaces that cater to students and locals alike and with the closure, we’re left with fewer options.”

It has not been confirmed who, if anyone, will be taking over the venue, with reports that it will close on the 20th June.
