The special hidden meaning behind Selena Gomez’s name is actually so adorable
Her first name was chosen for a very sentimental reason
It honestly feels like Selena Gomez is always at the centre of the conversation. Whether she’s dropping a new song, posting something cryptic on Instagram, or just minding her business – she still goes viral. She’s one of those rare celebs who can do pretty much anything and get people talking, and even if it’s cringe and she’s getting dragged it’s worth listening to. Selena’s become way more than just a pop star—she’s a full-on cultural moment – and that’s what happens when all of us grow up watching you on telly! The name Selena Gomez will never be forgotten by my generation, and I wonder if you know the sentimental hidden meaning on why her first name is so significant to her and her family.
She’s named after a pivotal artist who’s no longer with us
Selena Gomez grew up in Grand Prairie, Texas – very much small-town vibes – before making the big move to Los Angeles, where she now lives with her fiancé, Benny Blanco Her background is Mexican and Italian, and she’s always been vocal about how important her heritage is to her, often weaving it into her work and using her platform to celebrate it.
“My Mexican heritage is something that has influenced me my entire life and it’s not lost on me how representation matters,” Gomez previously explained in an interview with Billboard. “Throughout the years I’ve been doing this, some of the most supportive women in the entertainment business I have met have been other Latin women. I love the bond we all have.”

She continued: “Making a Spanish album was something I had wanted to do for a long time. Over the years, I’d release a Spanish version of one of the songs off an album but having an all-Spanish project was something that meant a lot to me. I worked hard on making sure I paid homage to my Latin roots, through the music as well as the aesthetics of all the visuals.”

Selena Gomez has shared the meaning of her name actually comes due to her being named after singer Selena Quintanilla – a singer deemed the “Queen of Tejano” music who met a tragic end.
“I’m actually named after Selena Quintanilla,” Gomez explained on her reality show Selena + Chef. “It gives me goosebumps sometimes because I was obsessed with Selena. I knew everything about her – I was just such a fan.”
She said it wasn’t initially the plan. “My real name was going to be Priscilla, and my dad said, ‘No. I want her name to be Selena.”
Selena Quintanilla was the first female Tejano artist to win a Grammy and paved the way for generations to come. Just as she was preparing to fully cross over into mainstream pop, her life was tragically cut short in 1995 at the age of 23. Selena’s life was tragically taken in 1995 when she was murdered by Yolanda Saldívar, the president of her fan club and manager of her boutiques.
Yolanda Saldívar was arrested shortly after the shooting and later convicted of first-degree murder.
