Veronica speaks out about being a ‘side piece’ during MAFS Australia 2025

‘I knew that I was a pawn in the game of chess’

Veronica Cloherty does not seem to have had a great time on MAFS Australia 2025. In a new interview, she laid into Eliot’s behaviour during the experiment, and how the show was edited.

“It became very apparent to me very quickly that I was a side piece in a bigger story and learning that Eliot had already been on the show kind of blindsided me right from the start,” she told the Daily Mail.

Veronica is very, very critical of the way the show was edited. She is not contented with Eliot’s portrayal on TV. “The edit didn’t make any sense to me. The Eliot that I experienced was closer to the Eliot that was first portrayed. I had difficulties with him from the wedding, and we had tense conversations throughout our honeymoon that were uncomfortable, that were disrespectful.”

Veronica claimed that several moments came across differently on TV to how she remembered them. Apparently, when Veronica opened up to Eliot on their honeymoon about having endometriosis, his reaction was different to what made the edit. She also said that the honesty letter Eliot we saw read out on the show was different to what he wrote to her. Veronica claims Eliot responded unkindly to her honest letter, and this moment didn’t make the final edit.

She said: “I was really feeling quite trapped and very isolated, just with him and I guess that resulted in me having this panic attack.”

Veronica was also unimpressed that the production team sent her to live with Dave for the couple swap challenge. “I knew was going to get stitched up. I knew that I was a pawn in the game of chess. I knew that I had no voice.”

She wishes the MAFS edit had showed more of her other qualities. “I was trying so hard and none of that was shown. None of my efforts were shown. None of my patience was shown. None of my tolerance of constant disrespect was shown.”

Veronica says she attempted to leave MAFS Australia several times, but the production team convinced her to stay so she could teach other women how to stand up for themselves in relationships.

The producers of MAFS Australia have repeatedly said they don’t set out to give particular contestants “hero” or “villain” edits. The executive producer Alex Spurway told the Daily Mail Australia this year: “I don’t think there’s such a thing as a bad edit, just bad behaviour… If you come in and you have certain beliefs, or you’re not happy with something and then you watch it back, you need to be thinking about what beliefs you hold, what values you hold, or your behaviour – before you come for the edit.”

Veronica also seems to have been shading Eliot on social media. She wrote on her Instagram: “You’re too pretty to be single’ nah. I’m too pretty to be wasting my time on lustful losers who lie and cheat.” Veronica tagged the post with plenty of MAFS tags, just in case there was any doubt who she was implying was a “lustful loser”.
