Lancaster cinch the title during nail-biting final day: Here’s your Sunday Roses recap

Lancaster claims victory once again with 184 points to York’s 160

By now, most Lancaster students will have probably heard that Roses are red again in 2025.

Lancaster have maintained their lead throughout the competition, going on to secure the victory over York this afternoon.

This makes Roses history – never before has a team secured four consecutive wins.

That’s not to say that York didn’t put up a fight, securing 13 more points and five more wins than Lancaster in today’s events. This reduced Lancaster’s lead in the competition to a slim 24 points: the smallest margin since 2008 when the teams were separated by just 2 points. This made for a nail-biting end to the weekend, leaving us all on the edge of our seats.

York started the day strong with a couple of badminton wins but as ever, Lancaster fought back, dominating in both volleyball (Open 2nd, 3-0 Lancs win) and korfball (44-1, an astounding win for Lancaster’s team who have dominated this event since it was introduced in 2022). Lancaster also claimed victory in quiz bowl (3-0), where each team’s trivia knowledge is tested in a game similar to University Challenge.

Lancaster’s wins in snooker, cricket and pole exercise also brought in a healthy haul of points.

At around 11am York began to respond with a flurry of wins in sports including tennis, mountain biking, lacrosse and dance. Lancaster’s men’s and women’s 1st Rugby Union matches were then cinched this afternoon by York despite a strong performances from the Lancaster teams.

It was at this point that our focus turned to the men’s futsal match, the final event of the tournament. A Lancaster win (11-4) confirmed that this year, Roses are red.
