Watch the CCTV moment a restaurant catches customers putting glass in their food to skip bill

The woman claimed she almost broke her veneers on the glass

San Marino Italian Bar & Restaurant has publically shamed a couple who managed to skip out on their £65 bill by allegedly putting glass in their food and then complaining about it.

The incident happened on April 5 when an unidentified man and woman stopped for a meal at the restaurant with a young girl believed to be their daughter. They ordered the Penne San Marino pasta, a chargrilled lamb shish kebab, garlic bread, Caesar salad, still water, sparkling water and a Coca-Cola, with the bill rounding off to £64.85.

However, instead of paying for their food, the family had more nefarious schemes planned.

In since-exposed CCTV footage, the man reaches into his pocket for a napkin, which he then hands to the woman sitting opposite him. The woman scoops up food into the napkin before calling over the waitress to complain. The belief is that the napkin contained broken glass, which they then used to demand compensation.

Taking to Facebook after the incident, San Marino Italian Bar & Restaurant publically shamed the culprits with the CCTV footage and a lengthy statement.

“The man pulled a piece of glass from his pocket and handed it to his wife. They suddenly claimed it came from their food and demanded a free meal plus compensation. At the time, we were caught off guard and didn’t get to review our CCTV footage right away. After they left, we checked—and saw exactly what had happened. The glass never came from our kitchen,” the business wrote.

“These kinds of scams are damaging to small, hard-working businesses like ours. We’re taking steps to report this and protect our team and guests moving forward. Please be aware—and thank you for your ongoing support.”

In another post, Managing director Miraz Yolcu detailed an interaction with the customers when the woman claimed her veneers could have been broken by the glass.

“They had almost finished their food when the lady called one of the staff and said she found a piece of glass on her food that was in her mouth and almost broke her veneer teeth she has paid thousands of pounds for,” he added.

“They wanted to go to a GP. They said they wouldn’t pay for this meal. Everybody was in shock. The staff were worried, and they called the manager who came and asked what had happened.”

Police are now investigating glass-gate at San Marino Italian Bar & Restaurant

San Marino Italian Bar & Restaurant have now referred the incident to the Cheshire Police, who are now in the “early stages” of an investigation.

“The caller reported that three customers had left the premises without paying for a meal after claiming to find a piece of broken glass in their meal,” they said in a statement.

“After reviewing CCTV footage the caller believes that the glass was placed in the meal by the customers. Enquiries in relation to the matter are in the early stages.”

Anyone with information is being asked to contact Cheshire police, quoting the reference number IML-2063790.
