Sam Nivola finally explains why Lochlan didn’t clean out the blender in The White Lotus finale
Let’s face it: It was stupid
It’s safe to say that season three of The White Lotus was divisive, and that division continued to split critics even into the bumper length finale. As Mike White tried to wrap things up on a season that hasn’t quite hit the pop cultural relevance and critical acclaim of his previous two, it seemed it was maybe just too little too late. One major dramatic part of The White Lotus finale centred on the fever pitch finale of the Ratliff family’s story – and Sam Nivola was at the heart of it – but the bit with the blender had everyone thinking it was just plain stupid.
If you’ve been wondering why on earth anyone would make a drink in a dirty blender, fear not – because The White Lotus season three finale just had Sam Nivola himself speak out about why Lochlan would do it. It’s still stupid, but at least we have a bit of an answer.
The context (spoilers)
The Ratliff family drama reached its finale in the last episode of The White Lotus season three, and Jason Isaacs’ patriarch character basically decided to kill his whole family and himself using the poisonous fruit from the “suicide tree”. However, he wanted to spare Lochlan – played by Sam Nivola. Isaacs’ character blended up a drink for all his family except Lochlan, but at the last minute had a change of heart and didn’t do it.
However, the next day Lochlan makes a drink using the blender that had the poisonous fruit in it and didn’t clean it all out. This resulted in him nearly dying, but surviving in the end and having a near-death, I saw God type of experience.

Everybody fumed about this moment, because who on earth would make a new drink in a used blender? You’d AT LEAST rinse it out, if not fully clean it with soap.
Sam Nivola explains his reason why Lochlan did it
Speaking on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Sam Nivola said “So it’s been about 12 hours and I’ve gotten this question probably 1,000 times already,” says Nivola. “Here’s my answer: I was expecting that Saxon had made a protein shake in it. I thought it was just leftover protein, so I thought you know what, a little extra protein never hurt anybody.”
