Hello Valentine’s weekend: We scouted out the best student spots for a solo date
Why did it have to be on a Friday…
With Valentine’s Day been and gone, the inevitable dread of a weekend in York approaches. Say hello to spending the day alone amongst a sea of couples (they’ve probably travelled specifically to York as a romantic getaway). To remove that dread we have compiled a list of the best spots in York to spend a solo Valentine’s weekend. Grab your mates and get out there!
Coffee, coffee, coffee
A trip to a local coffee shop is a perfect and simple solo date to take yourself on this Valentine’s weekend. As rich as York is in history it is also rich in independent coffee shops. The perfect location to romanticise your life on one of the most “romantic” days of the year. Plus, the caffeine might give you a bit of a boost (or a crash later).
Museum Gardens
As February begins to give the hope of warmer months in York, the Museum Gardens are the perfect place to embrace this slightly warmer weather. Often free from couples, the gardens are one of the best places to tackle solo. With the perfect playlist or an amazing book, the gardens are an easy, simple and affordable location to enjoy a solo Valentine’s date.
Tourist in your own city
Most Read
Studying in York, it is so easy to take the city we have for granted, so why not use your solo Valentine’s weekend as a chance to be a tourist in your own city? Take advantage of your free student entry to the minster, explore the city walls, walk down the shambles and reconnect with the city you are living in.
If we’re not going to be falling in love with someone, we might as well fall in love with York.
Picnic
This date somewhat goes in hand with those earlier mentioned, but take yourself on a picnic. Just because you are flying solo doesn’t mean that you can’t do activities normally reserved for a couple. This solo date could be the perfect opportunity to try out a new Pinterest lunch recipe you’ve had saved for months or get a to-go from your favourite café in York. Again the Museum Gardens are a perfect location for a picnic, or the Minster Gardens, or take a walk down the river to Rowntree Park.
Cinema
Sometimes a solo date can seem too much (having to be alone in your thoughts and all that), so why not take a trip to one of York’s many cinemas? The next instalment of Bridget Jones is coming out on Valentine’s Day for a reason, and it’s not for those who are in a relationship. If you’re going to be single you might as well be single with Bridget.
We hope these ideas help you have a perfect solo Valentine’s weekend! Have fun x
