Her Lancaster: Inside the women’s community making a powerful impact in Lancs

The group is run by a team of young volunteers

Her Lancaster is a safe space and a community for women that is focused on bringing them together to learn, grow and socialise. It is aimed at young women aged 18-35 and is open to all trans and non-binary individuals as well.

The group initially started as Girls Who Walk, to provide a space beyond nightlife and clubbing for young women to connect, especially those feeling isolated. Eventually, they began to expand to offer more activities besides walking focusing on empowerment, creativity, and community support – becoming Her Lancaster.

Abi, the Co-Founder of Director of Her Lancaster, told The Lancaster Tab in an interview: “Now more than ever, communities like Her Lancaster are so important… we’re seeing a rise in violence against women and girls, and globally, women are being oppressed. Coming together in a sisterhood is essential to remind ourselves that we’re stronger together.

“We wanted to make sure that Her Lancaster wasn’t just isolated… we enjoy our outdoor space every week, and we wanted to give back to our community and clean up the space that we appreciate and enjoy.

Grace, the Co-Founder and Media Lead of Her Lancaster, also said joining the group has helped her “gain more confidence, especially in public speaking”.

Adding: “It’s just a community for people to get together with like minded, similar interests.”

Jemma, Co-Founder and Engagement Lead, further said: “Great friendships have been such a big one for all of us… there’s ten of us now, and we’ve become such a good group of friends.”

The group hosts walks every Sunday morning at 10:30, with tickets available from their Instagram page. As well as, this the group hosts additional events that include workshops and other social activities.

The events that are run are usually crafts such as painting, scrapbooking and jewellery making, community events such as litter picks and collaborations with local businesses and well-being and fitness like yoga sessions. Her Lancaster also recently hosted a retreat in Grasmere, where 16 members enjoyed a weekend getaway, and they plan to organise more similar events in the future.

Jemma told us: “The retreat we did was absolutely insane… we took 16 of us away for the weekend, and everything ran so smoothly. It was amazing to see how much we could actually achieve together.”

Her Lancaster has had collabs with Herbarium and Run Up showing the importance of supporting small businesses and community groups in Lancaster. Their close collaboration with both organisations reflects their dedication to building strong local connections.
