Cardiff Met places as one of the lowest scored universities in sustainability rankings
It ranked as one of the three lowest scored universities in the UK for sustainability
Cardiff Metropolitan University has been ranked as one of the three lowest scoring universities in UK uni sustainability rankings.
The Welsh uni was placed below 1,500th in the QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2025 in its first year of being placed.
Cardiff Met’s overall score was non-applicable, with low environmental and social impacts and poor governance. Its environmental sustainability score was 40, environmental education marked 1.2, and environmental research scored 15.2.
Moreover, it scored slightly higher in its impact of education, coming in at 60.5, but employability opportunities and health and well-being averaged 33.7 and 26.9
These figures compared dramatically to Cardiff University, which was ranked 71st in the world for sustainability. Although much better than Met’s ranking, Cardiff University has dropped a significant 25 places since last year, and an even more significant 46 places 2023.
Cardiff University’s overall score is 89.3, ranking highly in areas such as environmental education, 88.6, and environmental research, 97.1. Its best scores, however, are in its social impact.
It was marked at a 96.6 for equality, 93.1 for employability opportunities, and 98.8 for health and well-being.
The University of South Wales scored similarly to Cardiff Metropolitan, coming in at between 1,400th and 1,500th. Swansea University placed at 121st, with an overall score of 85, whilst Bangor was ranked 196th and scored 78.8.
In response to the rankings, a spokesperson for Cardiff Metropolitan University told The Cardiff Tab: “Cardiff Met has a strong track record for sustainability and social impact and was the number one university in Wales in the People and Planet University League 2023-24, and 6th overall in the UK.
