Here are five alternative Christmas presents to gift Exeter Uni students this year

The 12 day countdown has begun!

With the first term coming to an end and the festive season just around the corner, some of you might be feeling a bit apprehensive about what to get your friends for Christmas. So, I thought it would only be right to compile a list of unique gifts that would make any Exeter student absolutely thrilled this holiday season.

There’s a long list of items that could delight an Exeter student, but this list is focused on the essentials—the gifts that truly speak to the Exeter experience.

1. A DJ

With the limited club options (looking at you, TP and Fever), there aren’t many places to choose from for a night out. Inevitably, we all end up in the same spot, with the same people, and the same story to tell the next morning.

However, if there’s one thing more consistent than our choice of clubs, it’s the music. Or, more specifically, the atrocious remixes. While DJs occasionally bless us with absolute bangers, they also have an unfortunate tendency to remix the same five songs, adding effects that destroy the vibe and leave the crowd confused for a good five seconds before recognition appears among the drunken faces. By gifting your Exeter friend a private DJ for the night, you’re sparing them nights of repetitive songs. Truly, a thoughtful gift.

2. A hoverboard

Exeter is a place of history, architecture, and culture. It’s also a place of hills. No matter where you go, there’s no avoiding them (trust me, I’ve tried). They’re one thing no one really warns you about before you apply to Exeter, and if they do, it sounds exaggerated. Spoiler alert: It’s not.

In my three months of living here, I’ve climbed more hills and stairs than I have in my entire life and my quads are living proof. For a very Exeter Christmas, treat your friends to a hoverboard. It will let them glide gracefully up and down Exeter’s endless inclines, and they’ll be eternally grateful for the rest of their hill-ridden lives.

3. A Ralph Lauren jumper

The “Exetah” stereotype isn’t just a meme—it’s a way of life. Between the endless parade of Longchamp bags, Tom Ford sunglasses, and Urban Outfitters outfits, it’s only fitting to help your Exeter friend complete their look.

A Ralph Lauren jumper is the perfect addition to their wardrobe. Choose any colour or style, but if you want to go the extra mile, consider the iconic American flag jumper. It’s the ultimate way to integrate into the “rah” lifestyle.

4. Glasses

We all have that one friend who’s blind in more ways than one. Often, they’re convinced the guy in the club is their future husband. Spoiler alert: he’s not.

The best way to guide your friend to enlightenment is to help them see—literally. Get them a pair of glasses! This thoughtful gift could save you countless nights of giving advice that’s ignored and passing judgment you swore you wouldn’t.

5. A house

Finally, perhaps the least outrageous gift on this list: a house. With the semester ending, so are the housing options for students. You’d think that with the number of students arriving each year, the housing crisis would’ve been solved by now. Unfortunately, finding a house that fits your budget, location, and aesthetic—while making sure your flat mates aren’t complete weirdos—is a Herculean task.

So, why not save your Exeter friend the stress and just buy them a house? It’s the ultimate gift, and they’ll owe you for life.
