If you have these things in your winter wardrobe then you’re defo a Liverpool student

Nothing screams UoL more than a skinny scarf and a North Face jacket

From skinny scarves to linen trousers, gorp core jackets and berets, the average Liverpool student is a sucker for collecting the most trendy on-campus items to add to their daily wardrobe. As we all start wrapping up warm to take on that long walk from Smithdown to university, it’s safe to say there’s definitely a universal uniform for students in Liverpool this year.

Don’t blame us for this, but we’ve brainstormed a list of the most iconically Liverpool items that you’re bound to find in your winter wardrobe for 2024. Some classics, some new trends, but ultimately – if you wear any of these things, you’re a certified Liverpool student.

The North Face jacket

Whether it’s The North Face puffer jacket, which you begged your parents to get you for Christmas three years ago, or the classic black raincoat that you got for Duke of Edinburgh in school – Liverpool students we see you! It’s still a winter classic and you’ll see them all over campus. They make it easy to pick a “rah no way” girl out of a crowd too.

Afghan coat from Pop Boutique

This one fits into two categories for me; either the perfect coat for the races, because what says “rahhhhh” like an Afghan coat, or the staple 1970s piece for the girls on campus that have definitely just rewatched Daisy Jones and The Six. It can keep you toasty and stylish at the same time – ideal winter attire. Perhaps you bought yours from Pop Boutique, or if not it’s definitely from Urban Outfitters.

Adidas joggers

Okay guilty. I own at least two pairs – a classic blue with white stripes and a green and white one too. Perfect attire for nipping to the shop for a sweet treat, or to wear hungover to your 9am if you even bother to make it. They’ve become a staple across Liverpool campuses for those of you that just look effortlessly cool and put together even in joggers and a hoodie.

Fred Perry jacket

Did somebody call Andrew Goodwin? Liverpool students are you turning up with the three stripes and a Fred Perry?

Fleeced quarter zips

Ah yes, the clothing item you associate with rugby boys on Wednesday night out. You’re bound to see a group of lads queuing outside The Hatch in some kind of sports quarter zip, or perhaps you’re wandering around the management school surrounded by aspiring finance bros. You just can’t seem to escape them, it’s like the collective uniform of Liverpool students.

Dresses and suits

As the first year hall dinners approach us, and society Christmas parties start to draw near, you’re guaranteed to spot some incredible formal wear on someone’s Instagram story soon. If you’re stumbling down Mount Pleasant in heels and a maxi dress, accompanied by a lad in a suit that he probably hasn’t worn since his leavers prom, I’m going to assume you’re on your way into town after a University of Liverpool dinner of some description.

Skinny scarves

Are they practical? Absolutely not. But are they cute? Yes absolutely. Big fan.

Doc Martens

The perfect winter shoe! But don’t forget to wear at least two pairs of fluffy socks with them, otherwise you’ll be saying goodbye to your feet. A pair of 1460s are a staple in a student wardrobe and will definitely become a part of your entire personality – speaking from experience.

Leavers hoodies

We get it babe, you’re still not over your secondary education. Are you feeling homesick? Or perhaps it’s wash day and the only hoodie you have left is your crusty leavers hoodie? Either way, these relics from the past always seem to find themselves on a Liverpool uni campus, unironically or not.

Now’s the perfect time to give your housemates’ wardrobes a raid to find some of these winter staples – there’s nothing more fun than spotting students on campus wearing some of the most iconic outfits.
